When we talk about menopause, most women think of hot flashes and mood swings or sleep troubles. But here’s something many don’t realize - those hormonal changes can affect your oral health.
Headaches and migraines during menopause aren’t just in your head. They can be a stress response to hormonal fluctuations triggering grinding and clenching during nighttime and daytime. Over time, this constant pressure and tension can lead to worn out teeth, teeth pain/sensitivity, jaw pain, and even lead to cracked teeth/fillings, root canal due to nerve trauma.
Your mouth can tell your pre-menopause and menopause story - sometimes even before you realize it.
By understanding this connection you can take steps to protect your oral health. With the right care, you can keep both your smile and overall wellness thriving. Let’s talk. A proactive approach today can prevent bigger issues tomorrow.

What an incredible day at the Association of Orofacial Myology of Canada symposium. The day was filled with learning, collaboration and inspiration. I’m especially inspired as we continue to grow and bring awareness about orofacial myology.

Dry mouth, also called xerostomia, results from reduced or no saliva and can affect the health of teeth and gums as well as the enjoyment and digestion of food. Left untreated, dry mouth increases the risk of tooth decay and gum disease.

To learn more about treatment options for dry mouth, talk to a dental hygienist and read: https://odha.on.ca/pbqM

Have you ever thought about how the way you breathe, chew, or swallow could impact your health? Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy (OMT) helps train the muscles of your face, tongue, lips, and jaw to work in harmony—improving breathing, speech, and overall development.

This therapy is life-changing for those struggling with mouth breathing, tongue ties, improper swallowing, or poor oral posture. If any of these sound familiar, you could be a great candidate for OMT.

Schedule a comprehensive evaluation with our Breathe MYO team to see how this approach can support your health and function. 📧 myo@thebreatheinstitute.com

While improvements in speech have been observed with OMT, if you have speech concerns, it’s important to be evaluated by a qualified provider, such as a speech-language pathologist, for a full assessment.

Did you know that your mouth is home to a delicate balance of bacteria that helps keep your oral and overall health in check? Mouthwashes often disrupt this balance by killing both h beneficial and harmful bacteria which can lead to issues like bad breath, dry mouth and increase cavity risk.

Instead of relying on mouthwash, consider using a tongue scraper. Scraping your tongue daily helps:
✅Remove odour-causing bacteria and debris
✅Promote a healthy microbiome
✅Improve taste perception
✅Reduce toxins that can contribute to systemic health issues.

A balanced oral microbiome supports strong teeth, fresh breath, and overall wellness.

Have you tried tongue scraping before? Let me know in the comments👇

While we don’t want to take the “treat” out of halloween, being mindful of few dental health tips can help protect your teeth without missing out on the festivities.

* SWISH AND DRINK WATER FREQUENTLY
Swishing helps to rinse away sugar and food particles. It also helps to dilute acids that have formed on the teeth.

*AVOID GRAZING ON TREATS
It’s better to eat candy at one time instead of grazing throughout the day. Everytime you eat something sugary it increases the amount of acid produced by bacteria in your mouth which erodes enamel over time. Try to enjoy treats as part of a meal when saliva production is higher which can help neutralize acids.

*WAIT 30 MINUTES BEFORE BRUSHING
Surprising to most, brushing immediately is not ideal. Acidic food and drinks can weaken enamel and brushing too soon can damage enamel.

*COMMIT TO GOOD ORAL HYGIENE
This is a great time to reinforce good oral hygiene habits. Brush 2 times a day and floss at least once a day.

Halloween treats are part of the fun and with a little planning, you can enjoy the festivities while keeping your smile healthy. Remember that moderation is key!

Happy Halloween 🎃
