If New Year New You is your vibe this year then I bet you are 6 days in to your new journey, overloaded with new information, sore from your new workout routine and overwhelmed with how long this going to take.

Most quick fix diets fail because it targets one specific area of the problem. Over time we have found that getting to your optimal health goal takes many steps in different areas of health to get you there. I know this can definitely feel overwhelming but if you want to see change, making efforts in all areas of your life will show you the difference you desire.

Holistic health is an approach to living that takes into account the various facets of wellness. Recognizing the full person—physical, mental, emotional, social, intellectual, and spiritual.

Mindfulness is an important part of being holistic, and it addresses an individual’s mental, emotional, and spiritual well-being.

A holistic lifestyle must include physical wellness and has an emphasis on prevention. Food is also important for similar reasons, but there are other important ways in which eating impacts wellness.

Healing yourself holistically can seem like a lot but you will see a much bigger impact on yourself if you target all areas opposed to one specific problem. It’s about forming healthy habits throughout your whole life to help control your mind, keep consistency in your goals and connection with your body.

If you’ve dove into gut health then you’ve probably heard the connection between the gut and brain. The gut-brain axis (GBA) consists of bidirectional communication between the central and the enteric nervous system, linking emotional and cognitive centers of the brain with peripheral intestinal functions.

Signals pass both ways between your digestive system and central nervous system. Key players in this connection include your enteric nervous system, your vagus nerve and your gut microbiome.

Disrupted levels of these neurotransmitters due to poor gut health are associated with an increased risk of mood disorders such as depression and anxiety. Inflammation and cognitive function are also associated with unhealthy gut conditions. They both can trigger chronic inflammation and activate the body’s stress response.

Research suggests that digestive-system activity may affect cognition (thinking skills and memory), too. The gut-brain connection is no joke; it can link anxiety to stomach problems and vice versa.

A troubled intestine can send signals to the brain, just as a troubled brain can send signals to the gut. Therefore, a person’s stomach or intestinal distress can be the cause or the product of anxiety, stress, inflammation or depression.

I don’t necessarily agree with the push for supplements when you are trying to get your health back or for daily maintenance. They become pricey, overwhelming and often don’t do what they lead you to believe. That doesn’t mean I don’t think there are some key players in the world of supplements that will complement your gut health journey.

Ashwaganda is one of my favourite supplements for many reasons. Ashwaganda supplementation has some demonstrated potential to improve aspects of our physiology that are related to or associated with good gut health.

Ayurvedic medicine has been using adaptogenic herbs for centuries to heal the body. Adaptogenic herbs can deal with mental and physical stress. Ashwagandha has a positive impact on the hormonal system, heart, lungs and central nervous system of the body.

When we consider the positive role of sleep on the gut microbiome and the clear connection between stress and gut health – there is a strong case to be made that ashwaganda can be the solution. It’s no wonder why ashwagandha has - and will continue to be - an effective supplement to help mellow out the effects of daily stress.

We’ve learned that brain fog really is more of a cognitive dysfunction than a cognitive impairment. Impairment has the connotation that something is lost and you aren’t likely to get it back. Well I am here to share tips on how to get it back!

Depression, anxiety, stress, drugs (legal or illegal), alcohol, insomnia, aging, jet lag, antihistamines, bacteria overgrowth, hormonal changes, or even too much screen time can be factors associated with brain fog.

Increased intestinal permeability leads to negative effects on the immune system, which have been demonstrated in diseases such as inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), diabetes, asthma, and psychiatric disorders including depression and anxiety.

Brain fog has also been associated with overgrowth of bacteria in the small intestine. Called SIBO (small intestine bacterial overgrowth), it is often accompanied with symptoms such as bloating, diarrhea, and abdominal pain.

This all proves the important connection between our brain and gut. A troubled intestine can send signals to the brain, just as a troubled brain can send signals to the gut.

Techniques such as meditation, yoga, cognitive behavioral therapy, gut-directed relaxation training, and exercising are all proven therapies to help you better deal with stress levels and improve mood, and consequently symptoms of digestive discomfort.

Yogic breathing and meditation has been researched to activate the parasympathetic nervous system which clears stress responses within the body, thus restoring the health and balance within our gut.

Gastric problems can be caused by irregular eating behaviours, a lack of exercise and irregular sleeping patterns but by enhancing the functions of our metabolism and digestion and strengthening our digestive system, Yoga gives us the opportunity to heal ourselves organically.

To achieve this, they say, one should practice yoga first thing in the morning or at least four hours after eating. This might sound extreme, but there are reasons behind this stance.

Water is vital for good health. Water helps break down food so that your body can take in and absorb the nutrients.

Water also makes stool softer, which helps prevent constipation.

Dehydration shows up on your face in the form of dry, ashy skin that seems less radiant, plump and elastic.

Drinking plenty of water may also be linked to increased diversity of bacteria in the gut.

By providing enough plain water, your body will be able to reduce the pain from inflammation in the gut.

I can keep going but I think you get my point. Drink more water and see the results for yourself!

Getting control of your gut isn’t as hard as it may seem. Starting small can make a really big impact. These five tips will help you get on to the right track and regaining control of your body again.

Poor gut health may manifest as fatigue, upset stomach, skin conditions, and autoimmune challenges.

The incredible complexity of the gut and its importance to our overall health is a topic of increasing research in the medical community.

Research over the past few decades has found links between gut health and:
- mental health disorders
- autoimmune diseases
- endocrine conditions
- gastrointestinal disorders
- cardiovascular disease
- cancer

The importance of the gut to our overall health is a topic of increasing research in the medical community. Research is showing us that our gut microbiome can affect every organ in our body and that alone is a good enough reason to get your s**t together!

I talk a lot about living a lower tox lifestyle. That to me means trying to eliminate as much toxic chemicals that go on and in my body as possible. Fragrance can be found in most products and cleaners we use.

The term “fragrance” or “parfum” on a cosmetic ingredient list usually represents a complex mixture of dozens of chemicals. Around 3,000 chemicals are used as fragrances. Fragrance is an obvious ingredient in perfumes, colognes, and deodorants, but it’s used in nearly every type of personal care product. From face wash, body wash, hand soap, makeup, hair care, lotions and that’s just what we apply to our bodies in the morning before we leave the house.

Some fragrance ingredients are not perfuming agents themselves but enhance the performance of perfuming agents. For example, diethyl phthalate it is widely used in cosmetic fragrances to make the scent linger. Phthalates are the choice ingredients in cosmetics because they are cheap and versatile.

Phthalates have been linked to early puberty in girls, reduced s***m count in men, and reproductive defects in the developing male fetus (when the mother is exposed during pregnancy). Health Canada notes evidence suggesting that exposure to phthalates may cause liver and kidney failure in young children when products containing phthalates are used or consumed.

Our skin is the largest organ of the body and since it is so porous, it absorbs whatever you put on it. Try to choose products with less ingredients, organic and most importantly avoid the word “FRAGRANCE”.

If you find yourself experiencing most or all of these problems, then it is time to start working on your gut health.

Living with the above feelings is not normal. Just because “most” people your age feel similar doesn’t make it normal. Something is effecting your body and your body is speaking to you.

I understand feeling tired at 3pm is normal for most but when it’s consistent and unbearable it’s a problem. Burping a few times after eating or drinking is nothing to worry about. Frequent burping (more than the 3 to 6 times) after a meal, or if it’s happening regularly when you’re not eating or drinking—can point to a more serious problem. Those are just two points I’ve touched on and can give you 100 other reasons why you need to switch things up.

If any of these topics are something you would like to discuss drop a comment below and let’s discuss some solutions!

The ultimate aim is to reduce harmful toxins from our everyday lives to become healthier mentally, physically and environmentally. The substances that often hide behind labels can be really alarming and they are everywhere, all around us. It’s not necessarily about leading a completely toxin free life, but more about making better informed choices.

Many conventional products, from cleaning supplies to personal care items, contain chemicals that can contribute to allergies, skin irritations, respiratory issues, and more. Removing chemicals from your home can have a great impact to the body such as reduced inflammation of the skin such as psoriasis, dryness, and eczema, to long-term changes such as improved gut health, mental clarity, and balanced hormones.

It doesn’t mean throw out everything you own and go buy everything new but moving forward you can make better conscious decisions.

Nutrition is a key player for having good skin health. When your blood sugar spikes it causes inflammation throughout your body. These spikes in blood sugar also cause more sebum, in other words cause oil production. A vitamin B deficiency can wreak absolute havoc on your skin causing a number of different issues. So eating more foods with vitamins and minerals can be way more powerful than any cream or cleanser. Of course start with good hygiene habits like cleansing and toning but don’t forget that what we eat is essential as well.
