Heart disease is a leading cause of death in Canada, but it doesn’t always look the same for everyone.

DID YOU KNOW? Approximately 63,000 Canadians have a heart attack every year. While many expect "crushing chest pain," for many—especially women, seniors, and people with diabetes—the signs can be much subtler.
Because these symptoms can feel like the flu or "just being tired," many Canadians wait too long to seek help.

The signs we might miss…
• The "Classic": Pressure, tightness, or squeezing in the chest.
• The Unusual: Pain in the neck, jaw, or upper back.
• The Vague: Sudden, extreme fatigue or "just not feeling right."
• The Stomach: Nausea, indigestion, or a "heavy" feeling in the gut.
• The Breathing: Shortness of breath, even without chest discomfort.
• The Skin: Breaking out in a cold sweat or appearing unusually pale.

What to do: If you or someone you’re with experiences any of these, call 911 immediately. Don’t wait to see if it passes, and do not drive yourself to the hospital.

Huge shout out to Jack, who recently completed his BLS recertification with Braveheart. Talk about perfect timing—Jack was able to put his skills to immediate use during a cardiac event shortly after. He was exactly the person needed at that moment to make a life-saving difference for someone in need. Incredible job, Jack!

Did you know you can access somebody’s phone without knowing their passcode to activate 911?

On IPhone simply squeeze the bottom two bottoms left and right!

And don’t forget to save your personal Medical ID on your phone- it could be life saving!

Reflecting on an incredible day at the First Responders Wellness Symposium Society yesterday. It was an honor to connect with so many frontline heroes—firefighters, paramedics, law enforcement, and search and rescue teams—all committed to the same goal: keeping our strong people strong.

The Value of Well-Being

In the high-pressure world of first responders, well-being isn't just a luxury; it’s a critical tool for operational readiness and long-term health. Yesterday’s sessions highlighted that true resilience comes from proactive daily habits and fostering a culture where mental health is prioritized as much as physical safety.

Key Message to Carry Forward

"If you don't take care of your wellness today, you will be forced to take care of your illness tomorrow."

Ever wondered what actually helps when someone around you is struggling with their mental health?

Most people want to help, but don’t know what to do in the moment.

Mental Health First Aid focuses on that gap.

It applies to early signs of distress, worsening mental health, or crisis situations.

💡 The goal isn’t diagnosis. It’s:
• Noticing early warning signs
• Staying calm instead of reacting emotionally
• Listening without judgment
• Guiding someone toward support

Because often, the first response shapes what comes next.

And small, calm actions can make a real difference.

Because you can’t restart a heart with a high-five. ❤️⚡
We all know the Braveheart spirit—being ready to jump in when it matters most. But even the best first aider need the right tools...

The Canadian Red Cross is partnering with Giant Tiger Stores to help strengthen emergency preparedness in Canadian communities by providing automated external defibrillators (AEDs) to 21 communities with a demonstrated need. Are you a local businesse, gym, or community hub? Get equipped with life-saving Automated External Defibrillators.
Why an AED?

✅ It’s Easy: Voice prompts walk you through every step.
✅ It’s Smart: The machine only shocks if it's actually needed.
✅ It’s Essential: For every minute that passes without an AED, the chance of survival drops by 10%.

Application closes April 30th 2026!

If you only remember three things about fire safety, make them these. They cover prevention, detection, and the actual escape—the "Big Three" of staying safe.

1. Install and Maintain Smoke Alarms
Smoke is often more lethal than heat. Most fire-related deaths occur while people are sleeping, and a working alarm is your only "eyes and ears" in the dark.

Location: Install alarms inside every bedroom, outside each sleeping area, and on every level of the home.

Maintenance: Test them once a month. A common rule of thumb is to change the batteries every time you change your clocks for Daylight Saving Time.

2. Create and Practice an Escape Plan
When a fire starts, you may have less than two minutes to exit safely before smoke becomes blinding or toxic.

Two Ways Out: Ensure every room has two potential exits (like a door and a window).

The Meeting Point: Establish a dedicated "safe spot" outside (like a specific tree or the mailbox) so you can quickly account for everyone.

Drills: Practice the plan twice a year. If you have kids, make sure they know how to crawl low under smoke.

3. Never Leave Cooking Unattended
The kitchen is the #1 place where home fires start. It only takes seconds for a grease flare-up or a forgotten towel to turn into a structure fire.

Stay in the Room: If you are frying, grilling, or broiling, stay in the kitchen. If you must leave, turn the stove off.

The "3-Foot Rule": Keep anything that can burn—pot holders, oven mitts, paper bags—at least 3 feet away from the stovetop.

Grease Fires: Never use water on a grease fire. Slide a lid over the pan to smother the flames and turn off the heat.

Ever wondered how early training can make someone confident in an emergency?

First aid isn’t just for adults! To learn compressions- we know it is all about motor skills and practice! In our classrooms, we use feedback manikins, that make learning even better. Starting young helps make first aid second nature, building confidence and calm in real emergencies.

It’s a reminder that preparation at a young age pays off — and for youth in Nova Scotia, our BraveHeart Youth First Aid course does just that. Teens aged 12–17 get hands-on, Canadian Red Cross-certified training in CPR, AED use, choking, injury management, and more — all in a supportive, confidence-building environment.

🩸 Myth: Is Aspirin a "Blood Thinner"?
The Short Answer: No. It doesn't actually make your blood thinner or more watery.

How it actually works: The Velcro Analogy: Your blood cells (platelets) are like Velcro. When you get a cut, they stick together to stop the bleeding.

The Aspirin Trick: Aspirin puts a "silk cover" over that Velcro. The blood is still the same thickness, but the cells just can't stick together to form a clot.

🚑 Why it’s a lifesaver in a Heart Attack:

The Rescue: Taking aspirin during a heart attack stops more cells from sticking to that blockage.

The Pro Tip: If you're having a heart attack, chew the aspirin! It gets the "silk covers" into your bloodstream much faster to stop the clot from getting any bigger.

Why call it a "thinner"? It’s just easier to say than "anti-stick medicine." Just remember: it doesn't change the liquid; it just keeps the "bricks" from stacking!
