5 years ago, we started the renovation that would eventually be ELITE Physiotherapy. It all started with COVID, when I one day said to Justin, that I’d be bored off work. We decided that I could renovate the basement to see if I could identify a demand for physio in Kingston/Greenwood. The same day, we cleared out Lego, toys and started demolition shortly afterwards. Who knew what would come next - a bigger renovation where I’d spend all day working on it, and then we would continue into the evening when Justin came home from work. There were many ups/downs and massive learning curves with all our mistakes! The clinic started part-time, and kept on growing. Due to ongoing COVID concerns, I kept working in Halifax and drove back/forth many days a week until it got too busy.
A big thank you to all our friends and family for the help and support. Also, thank you to all my great clients for their patience with the noise and stress of the even busier house renovation that followed. Here are some pre/post pics of the clinic space.

Exciting news!

Starting in early Spring, all qualified physiotherapists in Nova Scotia (including those working in private practice), will be able to refer patients for x-rays.

“This announcement will optimize the scope of practice for Nova Scotia physiotherapists who work in private practice and as a result, improve timely access for patients needing general radiography,” says Monica MacDonald, President of the Nova Scotia Physiotherapy Association. “It will save patients from unnecessary additional appointments to get a requisition if an x-ray is deemed necessary. We are excited to better support our patients and help them efficiently navigate the healthcare system.”

It is encouraging to see reductions in system barriers that will expedite diagnosis and treatment, in turn leading to improved outcomes for patients.

Physiotherapists working to their full scope of practice are able to help alleviate the strain on our healthcare system.

I recently had a client who reminded me that I encouraged her to run. I decided I should practice what I preach as I’ve gotten away from it so I loaded an app and started slowly. I use this picture to motivate myself to keep running even though my distances are short walk/jog intervals right now. It’s much harder with the lockdown. I was training with a group for motivation when I did this 1/2 marathon, so this time around it’s just me and the dogs. Even his endurance is lower, but we will build back up but not to the same distance since neither of us have the attention span for the long runs!

Did you know that you do not need a referral to see a physiotherapist in Nova Scotia?!
-
Although some insurance companies did not require a referral for physiotherapy prior the COVID-19 pandemic, many have since been encouraged to waive the requirement for a referral. This also includes referrals for virtual sessions. This has been great news!! It has never been easier to see a physiotherapist in Nova Scotia!

Patellar tendonosis

Patellar tendonosis (also called Jumper’s knee) is an irritation of the tendon that is just below the kneecap. This tendon, which connects the quadriceps muscle to the tibia, can be over-stressed due to muscular imbalances, overuse, and training errors.

This tendon is heavily involved when doing activities that utilize the quadriceps. Pain can be in activities such as going down stairs, impact from landing, sports that involve running, jumping, kicking, or sometimes prolonged sitting.

Treatment can consist of rest and activity modification, massage to loosen up trigger points of the quadriceps, strengthening of gluteus/quadriceps muscle to correct imbalances, stretches, needling, taping, patellar tendon strap

Be sure to have your knee thoroughly assessed to find the root cause of your pain and to ensure it is truly patellar tendonosis as it can be mistaken for other conditions.
