Good news! As of November 2025, Oasis has expanded to 23 communities across Canada! (And it all was started here in Kingston!)

As the end of 2025 gets closer, we look forward to what the new year will bring. By this time next year, we hope to have welcomed more sibling communities focused on healthy living and meaningful connections to the Oasis network!

What is Oasis doing today to grow its programming today? 🌳

Since 2021, Oasis has been supporting “The Original 6” Oasis expansion sites while expanding to 17 new communities. Such expansion would not be possible without the generosity of the donors and volunteers who recognize the importance of the Oasis mission!

We have also been developing a sustainability plan to help keep our growth stable for the long-term, and we’re steadily building a pan-Canadian network of older adults, community providers, researchers and decision-makers.

Oasis is continuing to grow! We appreciate all who have been part of this journey to realize a Canada that supports healthy and active aging-in-place communities across the country.

Applause and appreciation goes out to Fresh Food Market Pop Up Kingston and Lionhearts Inc. Kingston! Thank you for your in-kind (not to mention, very kind!) donation of a box of red peppers, which we shared with our members across 2 Oasis sites. 🌶

These peppers certainly didn’t go to waste, as we turned them into a delicious red pepper soup that was a hit at our Community Dinner last week.

Many people, organizations, and events have helped (and are helping!) Oasis grow. 🌿

One key turning point happened about seven years ago, in 2018. The Oasis that began growing at Bowling Green II was now partnering with researchers at Queen’s University, Western University and McMaster University, working together to bring the Oasis model to other communities and secure crucial funding.

The successful results seen in Oasis programming, along with the dedication to the mission brought by experienced staff and new partners alike, meant a new beginning for the Oasis network of communities!

From the Yard Sale, we raised $1,211.35 for Oasis programming — way to go everyone! 🎺

What did Oasis look like at the beginning? 🌱

Wind the clock back more than 15 years ago, when the organization we know today as Oasis Aging Well got its start right here in Kingston!

The first Oasis effort developed as a collaboration between the Kingston Council on Aging and the residents of the Bowling Green II apartment community on Bath Road.

By leveraging the strengths of residents along with existing community services and programs and the help of a skilled onsite co-ordinator, the results were clear: older residents can remain at home, in a supportive community network, and age with dignity. Sounds very much like a worthwhile concept to pursue!

There are 3 pillars that support the Oasis Mission. What’s the final pillar that supports healthy aging alongside nutrition and physical activity? It’s as simple as social engagement! 🎲🎨☕

Social activities are unique to each of our Oasis sites – because they are often decided and driven by members of our community! Common social activities seen at Oasis (and these are activities that anyone can partake in!) include games, crafts and coffee time.

There are 3 pillars that support the Oasis Mission. After nutrition, what’s next? How about some good physical activity! 🚴🧘🕺

Physical-focused programs common at Oasis sites through our group exercise classes! Chair exercises, line dancing, the use of fitness equipment and walking poles – all of these are great activities that help increase physical health and healthy movement.

There are 3 pillars that support the Oasis Mission. What’s the first? Good, healthy nutrition! 🥦🫐🧀🍞

Nutrition programming is provided in a number of different ways at our Oasis locations, from congregate meals (eating together as a large group) to community kitchens (cooking meals together to take home).
