Welcome to Episode 6 of “Meet our Members!” Introducing Branch President Paulina Brooks.

"Tell us a little about yourself!"
I am a born and raised Yellowknifer. I graduated from the University of Alberta in 2021 and was lucky enough to lock down a job in my hometown after completing one of my placements here.

"What motivated you to become a physiotherapist?"
When I was in grade 7 we did a project on the human systems and I picked the skeletal system. One of my moms friends was an X-ray tech and let me take x rays of a model skeleton. I loved it, and it was then that I knew I wanted to work in healthcare. Then in my 3rd year of Kinesiology, I took Care and Prevention of Athletic Injuries and I was hooked. The rest is history.

"What do you enjoy about working in the North?"
I can honestly say I’m blessed with a really amazing team of colleagues by my side which makes coming to work every day that much more fun!

"What area of physiotherapy are you most interested in?"
Since my first placement I knew I wanted to work in acute care. I love the team dynamics and the different barriers you see. I enjoy helping to get people back on their feet again.

"What types of physical activity do you enjoy?"
I love to play sports with my friends including soccer, softball, squash, you name it! I also enjoy hitting up spin classes on my peloton and taking our new puppy Cooper out for a walk.

"Do you have a favourite food or drink?"
An after work ceasar or a full glass of red wine are always calling my name.

"Are you a morning person or a night owl?"
I am 100% a night owl. When I was a kid my mom said I’d think of any excuse to stay up, and I think that is still true. I’m also rolling out of bed at the last possible moment after my alarm has already gone off and been snoozed 5 times. Terrible habit but what can I say I love a good sleep in!

Thanks Paulina! Stay tuned for more episodes of “Meet our Members”.

Welcome to Episode 5 of “Meet our Members”! Introducing our featured member of the month and member of the executive committee, Lisa McShane.

“Tell us a little about yourself!”
I was born and raised in Victoria, BC. I went to Queen’s University for my physiotherapy degree and graduated with a BSc PT in 2002. As a new grad, I moved up to Yellowknife in 2002 for some adventure. I met my husband Brian up here - our first date was fishing at the Mink Farm and I have 3 daughters - Leah, 14, Kate, 11, and Tara, 7. I’ve worked at Stanton Hospital in Yellowknife from 2002-2015, moved back to BC for a few years then moved back in 2017 and returned to Stanton in 2018-now.

“What motivated you to become a physiotherapist?”
When I was in Grade 8, I read a story in my grandma’s British Women’s Weekly about a hydrotherapist who worked with kids with disabilities in a pool in a spa in Switzerland. I decided then that that was what I wanted to do - help kids with disabilities by doing exercises in a pool.

“What do you enjoy about working in the North?”
I love the people of the North. I also love the sights - Aurora and midnight Sun and the crafts - beaded moccasins and fur mitts.

“What area of physiotherapy are you most interested in?”
I’ve always loved being a generalist physiotherapist and like working in all areas and with all ages. I love that being a physiotherapist is a constant learning opportunity.

“What types of physical activity do you enjoy?”
I love swimming and cross country skiing. Strength training and yoga have also become big in my life over the past few years.

“Do you have a favourite food or drink?”
I love cinnamon buns (no raisins), Moosetracks Ice cream and Lolea Red Sangria.

“Are you a morning person or a night owl?”
I’m up for the day early and get most of my best work done in the morning.

Thanks Lisa!

Welcome to Episode 4 of “Meet our Members!” Introducing our featured member of the month: Linda McConnell.

“Tell us a little about yourself!"
I grew up in Terrace, BC which is in northwestern BC. I met Mark, now my husband, at University and when he joined the RCMP, we were posted in northern Saskatchewan, then the NWT/Nunavut (before the Territories divided in 1999), then Regina, then Whitehorse. We moved 10 times in 25 years, and I have a very strange-looking resume as I always found a job but it wasn't always in physiotherapy. Mark retired from the RCMP in 2012 and we moved back to Yellowknife, for the third time. We have been here since then and have no plans to move.

"What motivated you to become a physiotherapist?"
I have always loved sports, and I had an injury while I was in my first-year university, which was my introduction to physiotherapy. I was impressed by the physio I saw, with his knowledge of human anatomy and function and thought I would like to learn more.

"What do you enjoy about working in the North?"
Most of all I love the people. I am curious about the people who have always lived here and interested in knowing what brings new people to the North. I love that we live in an incredibly diverse community/region with cultures from across the globe represented in Yellowknife and the NWT. I have always liked hearing about the stories of different people, especially in the small communities. How are people connected to each other? Which ones are sisters, brothers, grandparents, etc. The more we build relationships with people who are different than us, the more you realize we aren't that different 🙂.

"What area of physiotherapy are you most interested in?"
This has varied over the years. I would say that I am most interested in providing client/patient-centred care, figuring out what each person needs to be able to self-manage. To be able to encourage patients and build confidence in their own abilities is a challenge at times, but I think in the long run, the payoff is worth it. I don't mind people feeling like they want me to help them, but I don't really want people to feel like they need me.

"What types of physical activity do you enjoy?"
Walking, running (more like slogging), paddleboarding.

"How have you kept busy/kept your mood up during COVID?"
Thankfully, I work with an amazing group of people who have helped immensely to get through the past 16 months (and before that, too). I just came back from 5 weeks of vacation, so that helped, too!!! I love to knit, and find it to be very calming, and to justify my tv watching in the evenings.

"Do you have a favourite food or drink?"
I pretty much like all food except for green peppers.....as Cygni would say, "its not my favourite".

"Are you a morning person or a night owl?"
Definitely morning.

Thanks Linda!

Welcome to Episode 3 of “Meet our Members!” Introducing our featured member of the month: Kaeleigh Brown.

“Hi there! My name is Kaeleigh, I've been a physiotherapist since 2012, working in Alberta as a private practice physiotherapist for three years before moving to Yellowknife in 2015. I'm both a physiotherapist at Stanton Territorial Hospital and a clinic owner (Wildrose Physiotherapy), where I offer pelvic floor physiotherapy services. Equitable access to pelvic floor physiotherapy is my passion, and right now, I'm on a leave of absence from Stanton as I return to school and pursue a PhD in Public Health (my thesis is focussing on pelvic floor dysfunction). In my spare time, I play violin in the local Yellowknife orchestra, and enjoy running (even at -30C), biking, camping, and hiking with my partner and our two dogs. During the pandemic, I have also taken up the challenging hobby of sourdough baking.”

Thanks Kaeleigh!
