There is many important reasons to grow your own mushrooms but the most popular are for food & medicine. Mushrooms are an interesting food group as they are not considered a true vegetable. Without roots, leaves, or seeds they can grow with minimal light and sometimes in complete darkness. Mushrooms grow wild all over the world and have been honored in many food cultures since back to ancient Egypt. Most of our kits use a simple 4 step process. The rest is just making sure you have a clean environment and maintain temperature / humidity.
1) CREATE SPAWN
The first step to is to acquire or grow your own mushroom mycelium or "spawn". You can purchase live spawn jars from the Mushbox store or grow your own using spores.
2) SPAWN TO STRAW
Next you need to add the mycelium to the straw. We offer specially prepared straw that is shredded and ready for pasteurization.
3) ADD CASING LAYER
Once the straw has been fully colonized you can add the casing layer. Our unique blend of quality ingredients is designed to create a healthy environment for mushrooms to grow.
4) INITIATE FRUITING
The final stage is to expose the mushroom kit to a 12hour light cycle. This will trigger the mycelium to form pins and mushrooms will soon follow.
