Asking the question isn’t being difficult. We are taught to advocate for our clients, so why does it feel so hard when we need to advocate for ourselves?

The problem is that internal supervision is rarely a safe place to figure out how to bring it up. The person you’d be processing the dynamic with is part of the dynamic.

That’s exactly what external supervision is for. A space outside your group practice to process what you’re noticing, figure out what’s yours to address, and decide how to advocate for yourself without your livelihood on the line.

Some group practices are awesome. Unfortunately there are ones that are definitely NOT!

Non-compete clauses, fee splits that don’t add up, supervision used as a control mechanism… these things are real and they come up more than they should.

I’ve heard too many horror stories from therapists I work with so I wrote about the 8 red flags worth knowing before you sign anything. Not legal advice. Just honest things I wish so many of my supervisees knew before they joined a group practice.
