Introducing my October special Activity Box for kids with special needs. Each activity is thoughtfully crafted to address developmental goals such as dressing, sensory issues, social anxiety, sorting, emotions, writing, cutting, body awareness and safety awareness through fun games, crafts, baking and more.
So much and it all fits into this little box the kids also get to decorate.
How fun to teach kids with a theme related to the month that holds 2 holidays!

I get asked this question a lot from parents and families I work with.
What is the difference between a tantrum and meltdown?
Here are 3 things you can look out for to tell the difference..

Tantrums

One. Tantrums happen when kids know what they want and can't have it. A goal is usually a tell such as wanting a toy and told no.

Two tantrums are short lived and kids can recover sooner than later.

Three Kids have communicated what they want they know what they want they are upset because they can't have it.

Meltdowns

One meltdowns can happen when kids are overstimulated or over sensory issues.

Two These can last longer and they seek tools to help regulate themselves

Three Kids are unable to express or communicate what they want and you may see more than one feeling such as mad and scared. They may even not know what they want.

I hope this helps.

You don't need just a song for kids to learn their fingers, develop strength, be able to separate their digits and expose them to a different way to play with a food they can also eat.

We had fun using a new tool for fine motor skills and strength. In addition we learned about Earth day and how to keep our community clean.
Nothing should stop you from taking your special kiddo outside and participating in community groups.
It's not only about the fine motor skills, they also have opportunities to talk and meet others for social and language development.
Bonus your outside and walking which can sometimes be the best therapy.

Have non verbal kiddos. You may not have a talker board yet however you can improvise. If the kiddos hands are skilled they can cut paper or rip.
Then have them make it snow with the word GO on their board.
Then add WAIT by asking them to touch GO first before you let it snow with paper.

With Halloween approaching fast here are some fun ways to help your kiddos with special needs reach goals.
🎃
Get those punchy fingers working with clothes pin letters and have them spell their name or practice sounds.

Use a fun straw and balloon or a craft leaf to help them practice breathing in their noses and out through their mouths. Make it a race with others for social activity. Need some physio in there have them do this on their bellies.
🤸
Need something sensory. Add some spider webs to a box with items. Practice those fine motor skills as they pick up items ask them to describe the item for more speech practice.
Use pictures along the box to discuss steps or sequencing of a family getting ready for Halloween to spark conversation. 👍😁👂

Believe or not oranges are a great way to teach fine motor skills. Kids have to peel it.
Also use that time to help them NOT become frustrated by practicing speech sounds or letters.
Strengthen those math skills by splitting the prices into 2 lines. Ask which one is bigger and is that fair ?
How can we fix it to be fair ?
Then enjoy delicious orange slices together.
