Above all else, what you should know about me is I am a passionate helper. True to my Scottish, red-headed roots, I am stubborn beyond measure and dig my heels in hard when it comes to supporting people.
In 2009 I began my career as a counsellor. From the beginning, I was drawn to working with trauma-related concerns and had completed my Master’s thesis on the topic. I spent the first four years of my career working for a local non-profit women’s support service, as a Stopping the Violence counsellor (a program designed to support women working to heal from domestic violence experiences), and under a contract to support women who had been victims of childhood sexual abuse. During this time, I was immersed in working alongside other front line workers as well as liaising with law enforcement.
In 2010, while continuing my work in non-profit, I started a small private practice. Working in private practice allowed me to work with more diverse client concerns, and I loved the challenge of adapting to a larger mix of needs.
In 2012 I completed my time in non-profit and made the leap to full time private practice. This was terrifying, but exhilarating and I am so grateful to have had the opportunity to make the jump.
My work in private practice has always centered on working with survivors of trauma. It is absolutely and without a doubt my favourite area to work. This specialization has allowed me to work with some of the most incredible people who genuinely inspire me and my faith in humanity.
In 2017, literally as I was expecting my second child (she was born 7 days before we opened), I was given the chance to expand my private practice into a clinic. Within days of the birth of my daughter, ThriveLife Counselling & Wellness was born. A short couple of years later, ThriveLife has grown into one of the largest counselling clinic’s in Langley, as home to (currently) 15 therapists specializing in diverse areas of practice.
Working with a team of incredible clinicians has challenged me in so many good ways, and the combination of amazing clients and supportive clinicians led me to pushing myself out of my comfort zone. In fall of 2019 I began working on a passion project - which has now become the Beating the Breaking Point course. At the time I was receiving constant feedback from clients who work within First Response and Front Line work, that they had wished they had known long ago some of the things we were talking about in session. I realized that so much of what was coming up for them was similar and totally teachable. So I have taken some of these significant conversations and compiled them into a resilience training course that is designed specifically for First Responders and Front Line Workers to dig in and set themselves up for success and sustainability, both on the job and in their everyday lives off the job.
I have been blown away by the support I’ve received, and grateful to those who have shared their feedback along the way. I can hardly wait to see what comes next.
