Altered Carbon is a dark, cyberpunk science-fiction series that uses the future to hold a mirror to our present.
Set more than 300 years ahead, humanity has discovered how to separate consciousness from the body. A person’s mind is stored in a device called a stack, and bodies—called sleeves—are interchangeable. Death is no longer permanent… but equality, justice, and meaning are.
At the center of the story is Takeshi Kovacs, a former elite rebel soldier (an Envoy) who is brought back to life in a new body to solve a murder. The victim is Laurens Bancroft, one of the ultra-rich immortals known as Meths (short for Methuselahs), people who have lived for centuries by endlessly replacing their bodies.
What begins as a murder mystery quickly becomes something deeper.
