In this harsh world, we don't often get reminded that self-love is important. We often get told that we have to work, we have to go to school, we have to start a family, we have to do this or that. But we don't often get told, it's necessary to give yourself love.
The first thing that I feel when I take time off for myself is, I feel guilty. I'm letting people down. The first thing I feel when I want to tell someone my problems, is, oh, I am burdening them. I am making them stress out because of me.
But actually the reality is, everyone needs support and everyone deserves an ear to be heard and everyone needs love. And taking time off for oneself, even if it is making you lose precious work pay, even if it is reaching out for a friend, it's not a bad thing.
I will list out some ideas for self-love, not just for you, but for myself, as a reminder:
- listening to comforting music.
- petting a dog
- talking to a caring friend.
- eating something healthy or a treat that makes you happy.
- taking time off work to be yourself and not burn out.
- read inspiring stories or memes on the internet.
- reach out to a counselor by text, email or phone.
- seek out mental health support from the crisis centre in person (In London it's at Huron and Adelaide, called CMHA thames valley crisis centre)
- drinking water and juice.
- hugging a stuffed animal.
- cry it all out and tell yourself it's ok to cry.
- go out in nature.
- draw something or write poetry related to your feelings.
- tell yourself positive affirmations.
- go to Tim hortons or your favourite coffee shop.
- order your favourite meal or cook yourself your favourite food.
