๐ƒ๐ž๐ฌ๐ฎ๐ž๐ญ๐ฎ๐๐ž: Have you ever felt like life has gone flat, that your days are heavy with routines and obligations, drained of colour, even when nothing is obviously โ€œwrongโ€?

Psychoanalyst James Hollis describes this state as when our psychic energy quietly withdraws from habits, roles, or patterns that no longer serve us. It isnโ€™t laziness or failure. Itโ€™s the soulโ€™s way of whispering, ๐‘กโ„Ž๐‘–๐‘  ๐‘๐‘Ž๐‘กโ„Ž ๐‘–๐‘  ๐‘›๐‘œ ๐‘™๐‘œ๐‘›๐‘”๐‘’๐‘Ÿ ๐‘Ÿ๐‘–๐‘”โ„Ž๐‘ก.

When I work with clients in the depths of desuetude, there is often a lot of shame: โ€œWhy canโ€™t I get motivated? Why can everyone else seem to move forward, but itโ€™s so hard for me?โ€ They find themselves stuck, often comparing to others.

What Hollis reminds us is that this feeling is not a pathology, but an invitation back to oneself. Itโ€™s a call to listen more closely, to notice where your energy has ebbed, and to sense where it longs to return. Further exploration, like in therapy, can be helpful in (re)discovering what areas of your life are going unlived.

If you find yourself here, know youโ€™re not broken. Youโ€™re simply being called to turn toward the uncharted parts of yourself that are eager to emerge.

Thereโ€™s a quiet space between autopilot and awareness.

Itโ€™s the moment you catch yourself rushing through the day without noticing how youโ€™re really feeling.

Itโ€™s the split-second before you give into the urge to yell at your colleague, your spouse, or your kid(s), where you realize youโ€™re reacting, not responding.

Itโ€™s the brief pause that reminds us, โ€œIโ€™m here, and I can choose how I show up.โ€

Living on autopilot is something we all slip into, especially when life feels overwhelming, uncertain, or simply too full, and it helps protect us from having to feel too much, too fast. But over time, if we become stuck there, it can leave us disconnected from ourselves, our bodies, our relationships, and whatโ€™s most important to us.

Mindful presence doesnโ€™t mean we never check out. It means we practice returning. We hold up the mirror to ourselves, with gentleness and curiosity, and with the willingness to be here, just as we are.

Presence isnโ€™t perfectionโ€”itโ€™s a practice.

And the more we pause, notice, and intentionally choose our actions, the more alive our lives begin to feel.

In the rush of daily life, we often move on autopilot and react out of habit, emotion, or old patterns.

But when we pause, something shifts.
We create space to notice.
To connect. To choose.
To move from intention, instead of reaction.

These simple micro-practicesโ€”noticing, anchoring, checking-in, and intentional actionโ€”help us return to ourselves, one moment at a time.

Not perfectly. Not all at once.

This space is what mindfulness helps us find.

Itโ€™s the pause between feeling triggered and reacting on autopilot. The breath between a harsh thought and believing it.
It's in this brief stillness that we notice: ๐˜ ๐˜ฉ๐˜ข๐˜ท๐˜ฆ ๐˜ข ๐˜ค๐˜ฉ๐˜ฐ๐˜ช๐˜ค๐˜ฆ ๐˜ฉ๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ๐˜ฆ.

In therapy, we practice stepping into this space. Not perfectly, but gently and with practice, over time.

We begin noticing whatโ€™s happening insideโ€”thoughts, feelings, sensationsโ€”and learn not to be swept away by them.

That pause, however small, becomes a place of freedom:
๐Ÿ”น To soften reactivity.
๐Ÿ”น To act from values instead of fear.
๐Ÿ”น To respond with intention instead of from habit.

Therapy isnโ€™t about erasing whatโ€™s hard. Itโ€™s about finding space inside whatโ€™s hard, and meeting it authentically, with kindness and care.

It's Canada Day weekend...

For many, this weekend brings holiday time with family, lake swims, celebrations, and fireworks.

And for others, itโ€™s a day that holds complexity; reminders of history, of harm, and of the deep work thatโ€™s still unfolding.

Both can be true.

We can celebrate what we have and love, and also hold space for ongoing work and need for healing.

I'm remembering this morning trail in Italy a few years ago.

The sun had only just risen, casting long shadows across the path. For a brief moment, the heat hadnโ€™t yet settled inโ€”a rare pocket of relief in the middle of a blazing European summer.

I was pregnant thenโ€”heavy, slow, and stretched in more ways than one. Moving through the heat wave was like wading through syrup, not unlike the weather at home today.

But that walkโ€”quiet, warm, and goldenโ€”felt like a kind of permission.

To slow down.
To soften.
To stop measuring my days by productivity, and instead by presence. (A lesson I still need reminding of).

The heat today brought this memory backโ€”one my body had stored, quietly, until now. A seemingly small moment that held a meaningful message:

The waves come, and the waves go.
Some crash loud and hard.
Others pass quietly, unnoticed.

You are not the waves.
Not the storm,
Not even the rocks theyโ€™ve turned to sand over time.

You are not your past,
Not your coping,
Not your roles, reactions, the stories others wrote for you,
or the ones youโ€™ve told yourself just to make it through.

In therapy, we make space to witness it allโ€”not to reject what shaped you, but to stop mistaking it for all of who you are.

Because beneath it all is something steady,
Something spacious,
Something true.

Tonight is the March equinox, where the earthโ€™s hemispheres experience equal parts daylight and darkness, and a time widely believed to represent rebirth and renewal. The spring often brings a sense of hopefulness as life begins to emerge and multiply from the dormant winter (here in the northern hemisphere).

๐Ÿ“ธ taken by me a few years ago. I love the way it captures both the light and shadows, and contrasts the greenery that survived the winter, a beacon of hope to the branches whose new buds are still forming.

This is one of my favourite bits of wisdom in quote form. Itโ€™s followed me for years and years, written on a sticky note on my laptop, in my office, featured on my website, and always saved as note in my phone for on the go.

If I find myself getting hooked on distressing thoughts, feelings, or sensations, it is a welcomed reminder that we are not our human experiences and how we respond doesnโ€™t need to be automatic, but a choice after some distance, pause, and intentional consideration.

The false belief in the โ€œmono-mindโ€ is at the root of so much pain and suffering. While we canโ€™t necessarily control or change whatโ€™s happening on the outside, we can practice tapping into our inner observer. It is from this place we cultivate awareness, understanding, compassion, and ease - which can make all difference in how we feel on the inside & ripple positively to our outer world (family, friends, work, etc.).

If you are weighed down, thoughts spiralling, unable to feel and move through emotions, automatically reacting in ways that arenโ€™t working (or literally any combination of hard that this human life throws at us), know that you are not alone & something different is possible!
