We often treat therapy and self-reflection as purely personal. Private. Separate from the world around us.

But the truth is: the work you do within yourself is never only yours.

When you examine your patterns, question old stories, and choose to live with intention, the impact ripples outward. You become less reactive, more grounded, more compassionate. You interrupt cycles of shame, defensiveness, and inherited pain. You soften what might otherwise be passed on to your children, your partner, your community.

This is why inner work is also an act of service. And yes, it's political too.

Not in the sense of parties or arguments, but in the sense of power: reclaiming your ability to decide what guides your life, rather than living on autopilot or by inherited scripts.

Every boundary you set, every moment of self-compassion, every time you choose presence over reactivity, these are quiet acts of resistance in a culture built on speed, disconnection, and burnout.

Self-examination doesnโ€™t fix everything, but it does cultivate the qualities we need in a divided world: ๐˜ค๐˜ถ๐˜ณ๐˜ช๐˜ฐ๐˜ด๐˜ช๐˜ต๐˜บ, ๐˜ฉ๐˜ถ๐˜ฎ๐˜ช๐˜ญ๐˜ช๐˜ต๐˜บ, ๐˜ต๐˜ฉ๐˜ฆ ๐˜ค๐˜ข๐˜ฑ๐˜ข๐˜ค๐˜ช๐˜ต๐˜บ ๐˜ต๐˜ฐ ๐˜ฉ๐˜ฐ๐˜ญ๐˜ฅ ๐˜ค๐˜ฐ๐˜ฎ๐˜ฑ๐˜ญ๐˜ฆ๐˜น๐˜ช๐˜ต๐˜บ, ๐˜ต๐˜ฉ๐˜ฆ ๐˜ข๐˜ฃ๐˜ช๐˜ญ๐˜ช๐˜ต๐˜บ ๐˜ต๐˜ฐ ๐˜ด๐˜ต๐˜ข๐˜บ ๐˜ฑ๐˜ณ๐˜ฆ๐˜ด๐˜ฆ๐˜ฏ๐˜ต ๐˜ธ๐˜ช๐˜ต๐˜ฉ ๐˜ฅ๐˜ช๐˜ง๐˜ง๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ๐˜ฆ๐˜ฏ๐˜ค๐˜ฆ.

Your inner work matters far beyond you.

It is a quiet rebellion.

It is service.

And it is one way we help create a more humane world, starting from the inside out.

On this day, we honour the sacrifices of military and service membersโ€”past and presentโ€”and the loved ones who have stood beside them. We remember their courage, their commitment, and the freedoms and privileges we hold because of what they were willing to give.

As a military kid, remembrance has always carried a particular weight. I grew up watching the discipline, resilience, and sense of duty that shaped the rhythms of our family life. Service wasnโ€™t abstract, it was woven into the way we adapted, supported, and at times uprooted. It showed me early on that sacrifice is never only the offering of a single person; it is a shared commitment made by families, communities, and generations.

It also feels important to remember what their sacrifice was in service to. The wars, conflicts, and missions, many unknown, were fought to uphold foundational human values:

The freedom of thought and expression
The dignity and equality of all people
The right to safety and self-determination
And the hope for a more peaceful, just, and stable world

Those who served gave of their time, bodies, minds, and souls, with the belief that these values were worth protecting. Their hope was not only for survival, but for the possibility of a future shaped by peace, cooperation, and human decency.

As we give thanks today, may this day also invite each of us to be accountable to our own genuine reflections and consider:

Psychoanalyst James Hollis describes this state as when our psychic energy quietly withdraws from habits, roles, or patterns that no longer serve us. It isnโ€™t laziness or failure. Itโ€™s the soulโ€™s way of whispering, ๐‘กโ„Ž๐‘–๐‘  ๐‘๐‘Ž๐‘กโ„Ž ๐‘–๐‘  ๐‘›๐‘œ ๐‘™๐‘œ๐‘›๐‘”๐‘’๐‘Ÿ ๐‘Ÿ๐‘–๐‘”โ„Ž๐‘ก.

And he goes on to remind us that physical ailments, illness, fatigue, or old complexes signal the drain of our psychic energy.

๐Ÿ“– Swamplands of the Soul by James Hollis (pg. 67-80)

When I work with clients in the depths of desuetude, there is often a lot of shame: โ€œWhy canโ€™t I get motivated? Why can everyone else seem to move forward, but itโ€™s so hard for me?โ€ They find themselves stuck, often comparing to others.

What Hollis reminds us is that this feeling is not a pathology, but an invitation back to oneself. Itโ€™s a call to listen more closely, to notice where your energy has ebbed, and to sense where it longs to return. Further exploration, like in therapy, can be helpful in (re)discovering what areas of your life are going unlived.

If you find yourself here, know youโ€™re not broken. Youโ€™re simply being called to turn toward the uncharted parts of yourself that are eager to emerge.

Thereโ€™s a quiet space between autopilot and awareness.

Itโ€™s the moment you catch yourself rushing through the day without noticing how youโ€™re really feeling.

Itโ€™s the split-second before you give into the urge to yell at your colleague, your spouse, or your kid(s), where you realize youโ€™re reacting, not responding.

Itโ€™s the brief pause that reminds us, โ€œIโ€™m here, and I can choose how I show up.โ€

Living on autopilot is something we all slip into, especially when life feels overwhelming, uncertain, or simply too full, and it helps protect us from having to feel too much, too fast. But over time, if we become stuck there, it can leave us disconnected from ourselves, our bodies, our relationships, and whatโ€™s most important to us.

Mindful presence doesnโ€™t mean we never check out. It means we practice returning. We hold up the mirror to ourselves, with gentleness and curiosity, and with the willingness to be here, just as we are.

Presence isnโ€™t perfectionโ€”itโ€™s a practice.

And the more we pause, notice, and intentionally choose our actions, the more alive our lives begin to feel.
