✨ Aging-in-Place ✨ means staying in your own home and community safely, independently, and comfortably as you grow older, without needing to move due to age or ability changes.

So why the gap? One reason is because most homes aren't built with aging in mind.

At Flourish & Function, we use Occupational Therapy expertise to help clients modify their homes with functional (and stylish - if you're into that) solutions that support aging in place—from grab bars that blend into your design to full home reconfigurations that meet your long-term needs.

You deserve to stay in the home you love. Let’s make it possible.

That's right. Your home can still be functional and work hard FOR you... And still be beautiful.

✅ Accessible homes can feel:
• timeless
• stylish
• cozy
• elevated

• clinical
• out-dated
• sterile

Remaining at home with dementia IS possible... But you or your parent/loved one NEEDS A PLAN 📝

Swipe through to see a list of suggestions for yourself or your loved one to help make remaining at home as safe, independent and comfortable as possible.

And please keep this in mind: 💡 No two dementia diagnoses will ever look the same. Everyone's disease progression, support system, home set up, baseline health, financial status, and lifestyle is unique to them, and therefore requires specific planning to their needs.

If you're noticing changes in your or your parents memory or other part(s) of your cognition (attention, problem solving, language, sequencing, orientation, etc.), speak with your doctor.

To gain even more knowledge - speak to an OT (that's me!). While OTs can't give you diagnosis, we can assess your cognition and provide immediate, person-specific recommendations in order to support and potentially improve your cognitive status.

Seeing Clearly: The Power of High-Contrast Paint!

Did you know that paint colour choices can make a big difference for people with visual impairments? High-contrast colours help define spaces, making it easier to navigate safely and confidently.

Here’s why contrast matters:

🔹 Walls & Trim – Painting doors, baseboards, and trim in a colour that contrasts with the walls helps define room boundaries and pathways.

🔹 Stairs & Steps – A contrasting edge on steps improves depth perception and reduces fall risks—especially in dim lighting.

🔹 Counters & Cabinets – Choosing cabinetry that contrasts with countertops makes it easier to see and use workspaces.

🔹 Light Switches & Door Handles – A pop of contrast helps key features stand out for easier access.

Good design isn’t just about style—it’s about making your home functional and safe for everyone. Want help creating a home that’s easy on the eyes (literally)? I'd love to chat!

LET'S TALK FALLS. ⚠️ They are a big deal.

THE FACTS: 1 in 3 adults aged 65+ falls each year, and over 75% of falls happen in or around the home!

THE BAD NEWS: 50% of seniors hospitalized for a fall never return home or regain their previous level of independence. On top of that, fear of falling often reduces activity levels which loss of strength and balance

THE GREAT NEWS: Occupational therapists (me!) are trained to assess fall risks and recommend home modifications and strategies to improve safety and independence. With over 10 years of experience performing risk assessments and creating interventions, I would be honoured to help you decrease your risk of falls at home!

By assessing your current function, reviewing your medical history, and thoroughly assessing your home (think: poor lighting, loose rugs, lack of grab bars, etc.), we can find the problem areas and address them BEFORE the falls happen.

Ready for some preventive care? I'd love to chat!

Older adults, will your home grow with you?

Your home should support your goals, needs and lifestyle, not hold you back. 🏡

As a Registered OT, I specialize in adaptive home solutions that make everyday life easier—whether it’s modifying an entryway, improving kitchen accessibility, or designing a safer bathroom. Your home should work with you and for you, not against you.

Not sure where to begin with home modifications? This is a good start:
✅ Identify problem areas (stairs, bathrooms, doorways, cabinet hardware, flooring, lighting, entries/exists, item placement)
✅ Think about future needs (aging, cognition changes, mobility changes)
✅ Consult with an expert (like me!) to make a plan.

We offer a quick and affordable aging-in-place consultation that will help to identify the problem areas and come up with immediate solutions. I'd love to chat more - DM ME or email at ffotdesign@gmail.com

Ready to offer something ✨ new ✨ to prospective clients?!

If you’ve ever had a client who wants to stay in their home long-term, or who needs a space that supports mobility or cognitive changes - I’d love to collaborate.

At Flourish and Function, I bring the Occupational Therapy (OT) lens to your design vision so together, we can create homes that are not only beautiful, but truly livable for every stage of life.

What does OT lens mean? It’s about considering how people move, interact, and use their environment in their daily lives. For example, when designing a home, an OT lens focuses on making sure the space is safe, easy to navigate, and supports independence—whether someone is aging in place, recovering from an injury, or managing a disability. It's about creating spaces that help people live their lives with more comfort, confidence, and ease.

Curious if my expertise would support your business? Send me a message and I'd love to chat more! 💌

You don't have to settle for the status quo
(if you don't want to!).

Stylish, functional alternatives do exist—like this stunning shower seat from . Proof that accessibility can be beautiful too!

📢 LISTEN: I know looks aren’t everything (really, I do!). But I also know that the way these items look can sometimes stop people from getting the safety or support they need.

If finding stylish, fun, or eye-catching alternatives makes accessibility equipment more accepted, embraced—even exciting—I’m all for it!

Looking for aesthetic options for accessibility, mobility, or home modifications? I’m your girl. And if they don’t exist yet, I’m on a mission to change that (looking at you, lifeline).
