Nervous system regulation isn’t just about deep breathing and meditation.
Sometimes it looks like paddling quietly across the water, letting the the sights and sounds of nature remind you that you’re safe, alive, and allowed to just be.
I spent some time kayaking this week…something that always helps me feel grounded and restored. Being on the water calms my nervous system. It slows everything down. It brings me back into connection with myself, with nature, with the moment.
And yet, like so many people, I sometimes struggle to give myself permission to do the things I know help me feel better. The world often asks us to be productive, available, and “on” all the time. Restorative time can feel indulgent, or even wasteful when our nervous systems are primed to scan for danger, stay productive, or keep pushing. In a world that asks so much of us, slowing down can feel unfamiliar or unsafe.
But nervous system regulation isn’t a luxury…it’s a necessity. When we feel dysregulated or depleted, it’s much harder to show up in our relationships, in our work, or for ourselves in the ways we want to.
If you’ve been feeling overstretched or out of sync, I encourage you to find a moment that helps you feel grounded. That reminds your body you’re allowed to melt.
What helps you come back to center?
