💜 The Building Blocks of Life Aren’t Equally Accessible 💜
For children and youth with disabilities, the gaps are real — and they matter.
Social connection. Emotional well-being. Independence.
These aren’t “extras” — they are the foundation of growing up. Yet for many kids with disabilities in Canada, access to these building blocks is limited from the very start.
📉 Limited Access to Sports & Recreation
In Canada, children with disabilities are significantly less likely to participate in organized sports and recreation compared to their peers — often due to inaccessibility, lack of inclusive programs, cost, or limited availability.
Sports aren’t just about movement — they build confidence, friendships, teamwork, and self-belief.
🚸 Excluded from Social Groups & Recess
School recess, clubs, and peer groups are where children learn how to socialize, resolve conflict, and build independence.
Yet many kids with disabilities experience social exclusion, reduced participation during recess, or isolation — not because of ability, but because environments and supports aren’t inclusive.
🧠 Barriers to Therapy & Support
Early and ongoing access to therapies like physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, and social skills programs is critical — yet in Canada, families often face long waitlists, limited public funding, and inconsistent access, especially after school hours or as children age.
When support is delayed or unavailable, gaps widen — affecting emotional regulation, independence, and long-term outcomes.
😔 The Emotional Impact
Children with disabilities in Canada are at higher risk of loneliness, anxiety, and mental health challenges — largely linked to isolation and lack of inclusion.
When kids are repeatedly left out, it impacts self-esteem, confidence, and their belief in what’s possible for their future.
🌱 Why This Matters
When kids don’t have access to inclusive sports, social spaces, therapies, and community programs, the effects follow them into adolescence and adulthood — limiting independence, opportunity, and connection.
💜 At Nora’s Place, we’re working to change that.
We’re building inclusive spaces where children and youth with disabilities can belong, participate, grow, and build independence — alongside their peers and within a supportive community.
Because inclusion isn’t optional —
It’s the foundation for growing up.
✨ Accessible. Inclusive. Unstoppable. ✨
