April 14th, 2026, marks 10 years since the British Columbia Provincial Health Officer declared a public health emergency in relation to illicit overdose deaths in British Columbia, more commonly referred to as “drug poisoning” deaths.
In 2016 the Provincial Health Officer declared “The recent surge in overdoses is a huge concern for us”. Despite this statement and 10 years of an ongoing public health emergency, over 16,000 people have died in BC due to the toxic drug supply, all these deaths are avoidable, and all these individuals are loved and missed by their family, friends and community.
Locally, the Pender Harbour Health Centre is a proud partner of the Sunshine Coast Community Action Team (SCCAT). The SCCAT was set up to save the lives of all those who are at risk due to the poisoned drug supply and this current overdose public health emergency. The CAT provides education, support, and interventions to meet community needs, guided by those with lived experience of substance use.
To recognize this anniversary and honor those who have been lost, the SCCAT is hosting a number of events in April to bring awareness and promote community conversations. Two of these events include:
1. A keynote with Greg Hemminger – Advancing the Patient Voice in the Substance Use Care System
2. No Fixed Address: The White Cart Memorial – FREE Film Screening
If you are interested in attending these events, please see the posters below for more information. If you would like to get involved or learn more about the SCCAT, please reach out to info@sccat.ca.
To those in Pender Harbour and surrounding communities who are struggling with substance use, please know the Pender Harbour Health Centre is a safe space for you to access care and harm reduction supports.
