B.C.’s shipyards don’t just build ferries, they build communities, careers, and a stronger economy. Let’s make sure those benefits stay here. Have you written to your MLA yet? https://buildthemhere.ca/

Doug nailed it in this interview!

We’re treating Temporary Foreign Workers as “less than Canadian”—and that’s wrong.

Big corporations have been using this program to undercut wages and drive down standards for everyone. It’s not fair to Canadian workers, and it’s not fair to the people brought here under these conditions.

It’s time for a system that respects workers and pays fair wages.

This Labour Day, we salute the ironworkers who build the bridges, towers, and skylines that shape our communities. The work is tough, the sacrifice is real and the results stand for generations. Solidarity is our strength!

Enjoy the day off. You earned it.
Happy Labour Day from Ironworkers Local 97.

In 1959, a BC judge sent the president and two business agents of Ironworkers' Local 97, as well as the editor of The Fisherman union newspaper, to Oakalla Prison for contempt of court.

The issue? Local 97 was on a legal strike during the building of the Second Narrows Bridge, but the employer wanted the strike ended. They argued that a particular unfinished span was too dangerous to wait and the courts agreed, ordering the ironworkers back to work.

The workers refused to abandon their strike, arguing that if the bridge was at risk of collapse, it was a risk to workers too. That's when the infuriated judge sent the four men to prison.

What happened then? Read the whole story here: https://www.labourheritagecentre.ca/berger/
