A note from Emma:
As I prepare for maternity leave, I’ve been reflecting on the past four years at Feath & Elemi, and I want to express how truly meaningful this time has been. Getting to know each of you, hearing your stories, greeting you at the desk, watching your progress through treatments — has been something I have genuinely cherished. It has been a privilege to be a steady, familiar presence in this space of wellness and care.

I also want to share how much I deeply love the F&E family — our practitioners, our clients, and our community. Working here has never felt like just a job. The warmth, kindness, and support that flows through this clinic is something special, and I feel fortunate to have been part of it.

Over the next few weeks, we’ll be transitioning the front desk as I step back to welcome my new little one. My last day will be December 23rd, and after that, you’ll be in wonderful hands with Emersen and Camara — your go-to receptionists moving forward. I know they will take great care of you and continue to carry the heart and spirit of F&E.

I started having symptoms over 8 years ago and was only able to find a practitioner and get treatment in March of 2024. To say my life is different is a huge understatement, and I am very grateful there are finally people out there helping women navigate this crazy hormone upheaval 🥰 And after this course I will be one of them ❤️

How allergies and an injury turned into a career......

I’ve had allergies my entire life. MY. WHOLE. LIFE. It started with dairy products as an infant, then progressed to cats, scents, coconut, and fish as I got older. Some are mild, some moderate, one is extreme.

Learning how to avoid common triggers isn’t always easy as a child, so taking allergy pills was a weekly occurrence. Trying to find a job avoiding these triggers was harder. Working in the public exposed me to perfumes and scented lotions causing headaches, ‘flu- like symptoms, and sinus infections.... so I got a job in an insulation packing plant where I could wear a face mask and/or respirator on every shift. It was hard work and being a petite female made it even harder but I was determined to work twice as hard to prove I was just as good as the guys....and developed a repetitive strain injury less than a month into the job.

I was working 12 hour shifts doing the same movements day after day. One morning I woke up and my ring finger on my left hand was tingling. It soon spread to my pinkie finger and then ring and pinkie on my right hand as well. I was referred to a doctor who said I had carpal tunnel, an ER doctor told me there was nothing wrong/that he could do, a chiropractor to fix my crooked neck and back posture, and a massage therapist to loosen up my arms. NONE of them did any type of nerve tests to see where the problem was coming from or help alleviate the now searing pain that was shooting down the back of my left arm from armpit to fingers. Then I was sent to a chiropractor who specialized in A.R.T. and soft tissue injuries....

After 1-3 treatments a week for 6 months the problem was GONE. It required stretching 4x daily, bi-weekly massage, and weekly chiro appointments to keep the scar tissue from coming back and my problem from returning. I decided I wanted to help people like that and enrolled in the massage therapy program at Medicine Hat College in 2002. We learned physiology, pathology, orthopedics, biomechanics, and I discovered my love of Anatomy. Classes included lumbar assessments, abdominal massage, pre- and post- natal and labour and delivery massage, TMJD (Temporomandibular Joint Dysfunction) and MVA (Motor Vehicle Accident) treatments.... While there I was offered the chance to take an ‘Aromatherapy and the Therapeutic Uses of Essential Oils’ course as an add-on to my massage therapy training. “Essential oils can make your hands feel stronger and feel 3” deeper”. I was intrigued but skeptical since I was allergic to ‘scents’. It was here that I met a man who has since become my mentor in essential oils- Blaine Andrusek of Blaine Andrusek Phytotherapeutics based in Calgary, AB.
