Its the little things in life that empowers serenity.
I quote Rita Heuving's post of this morning.
Noticing the little things in life is Spirituality, which empowers us.
Here I noticed the slightly blue colour in the Anise Hyssop leaves.
Slightly in the small seedlings on the left and more pronounced on the emerging plant in the garden. Its a gene that regulates the plant's colours. Don't know why, but its part of this little plant's life.
I am grateful for this plant, because its leaves are high in Rosmarinic Acid (RA), which is a powerful plant-derived phenolic antioxidant compound that prevents the Covid virus from infecting us. RA does not care what variant hops around us. It just stops Covid dead in its tracks. Since RA is a God-given natural plant compound, it does not force the virus to mutate as synthetics do.

Grenville Herb Farm will sell a variety of urban tomatoes and herbs this Spring. Since Ontario's State of Emergency and Stay-at-Home Order has now been extended to at least May 20th. I will contact all those who purchased tomato plants and herbs last year by email and Facebook. You can contact me by email: william.langenberg@sympatico.ca I will provide a list of tomatoes and herbs once they are ready to leave my place. I will also set up a stand in my driveway in Merrickville, accompanied with a map. I will keep everyone posted. Let's play it safe this summer.

I will keep you up-to-date on the Blossom-End Rot (BER),which appears in my tomatoes each year. After doing some reading about the physiology of BER I decided for the first time to spray each fruit with a mixture of 2 calcium tablets soaked in 1 litre of water to which I added one teaspoon of citric acid and sprayed this concoction on all the FRUITS. You can see the white calcium blotches on the fruit on the left and the remnants (scars) of the blossom-end on the fruit in the middle and on the right. But so far no BER.

I only sprayed the fruits twice so far.

The last couple of days I had a few DISCOMFORT problems, so I am wearing an ice pack straight out of the freezer and limit my hours OF ACTIVITIES outside. It was 36C in the sun this afternoon, with a RH of 50%, which gives us a HUMIDEX of 47 C, which is the danger zone. Please keep this chart handy if you do any work outside. Any discomfort you may be in the DANGER zone.

BLOSSOM END-ROT ON TOMATOES

I have been looking at a possible solution to Control Blossom-end-Rot on tomato fruits over the winter months. I did a few experiments at home.

Blossom-End-Rot (BER) is a physiological disorder and is aggravated when the temperature is dry and hot. During the day the plant transpires because of the heat and sucks the moisture out of the fruits. Excessive watering also aggravates the situation and watering with Epsom Salt makes it even worse. So, what to do now?

Let's try this. It is a free suggestions to all of you, because its my BD tomorrow and I have to do something positive and useful to society.

Here is my recipe: Add 2 calcium tablets into a 1 litre sprayer, add 1 teaspoon of citric acid (to chelate the calcium) and add a few ounces of gingerale (carbonation) and 1 litre of water. Shake well and spray it on your tomato fruits. The calcium will strengthen the fruit's cell walls. The citric acid works as a chelate to bring the calcium inside the cell walls. Voila the fruits are protected. If this does not work I will go into hiding.

Hopefully this will work. Good Luck.

KEMPTVILLE FARMERS MARKET
I will not be at the Farmers Market this Sunday June 21.
The temperature will be too high (32C) for the plants and for me on the hot pavement. In addition, I am asking you to follow the market rules as I was reprimanded by the Market Board for make 1 plant sale before noon hour, which was cancelled. Furthermore I have to keep my 6 ft distance with you as a customer and you cannot stay at my table for a chat. This year will be my last year at the market (14th year) and I would like to leave the market in good standing. Hope to see you again on Sunday June 28th. I will come to the market this year on a weekly basis, not as a season vendor.

Wild Catnip-Nepata cataria. Transplanted rooted cuttings taken from Wild Catnip at the farm. Cuttings were taken over two days Jun1 and Jun2, stuck in a rooting medium at the farm, and kept under high humidity and high-powered lights for 2 weeks. Today they are transplanted and some are tested by "Super Dave", our cat. He gets paid one can of tuna for a days work.

All loaded up for the Kemptville Farmers' Market tomorrow. The market is at B&H parking lot at 301 Rideau St.from noon until 4 PM. We need to practice our social distancing and I will be wearing my usual facemask and I will bring Lysol wipes, that's all I could get. I have "SEVEN" different types of Basil. They are the top of the line basils from around the world: HOLY BASIL, DOLLY BASIL, SPICY GLOBE BASIL, MARSEILLES BASIL, DOLCE FRESCA BASIL,ARARAT BASIL and a few SWEET BASILS. These basils I have grown since 2007; and a few such as Ararat and Marseilles are being evaluated for their antioxidant activities. Spicy Globe is a very intense spicy sweet flavour, excellent for salads and teas and it is a container basil. Marseilles is a container anise-sweet basil. Ararat (from Mount Ararat in Turkey) is a strong anise-flavoured basil. Dolly Basil and Dolce-Fresca are sweet Genovese basils. HOLY BASIL (TULSI) is the original ancient Indian Hinduism basil. Today it is a must have for those practising yoga. Holy Basil has a distinct Thai flavour and numerous medicinal properties and makes an ideal house plant.
FINALLY, I will bring a variety of tomato plants for those unsuccessful in securing a plant or two.
AND, if I am not mistaken, I have a dozen PI****FF plants

This Sunday at the Kemptville Farmers' Market as per request over the past seven years: "Seedless and Spineless" baby cucumbers. These cucumbers are parthenocarpic, which means that they do not produce seeds until they get over ripe. These cucumber plants are happiest in a 9 inch container and will produce abundantly. You can also place them in a sunny spot on the deck or patio. The cucumbers are roughly 4 - 4 1/2 inches long and are called "Snack Cucumbers. The plant gets about 3 feet tall and about 2 feet wide.

Defiant tomato is growing in popularity among home gardeners, because you don't have to worry about blights, the main killing fungus in tomatoes. There is also a theory that goes around that the newer hybrids do not have the flavour.
That is totally horse hockey. This one, DEFIANT, has the perfect acid - sugar balance.
The flavour of a tomato is actually determined by the soil condition. The Italians, for example, have not only the best tomato varieties, but they also produce the best flavoured tomatoes, because they are grown under the best soil-growing conditions. Tomatoes grown on volcanic soil (lava soil) give a better flavour to tomatoes and therefore fetch a higher price.
The best flavoured wine is produced in specific wine-producing regions where the soil is different. Therefore the soil in your garden will determine how perfect the flavour of your tomato will be.

Potted up "DEFIANT" Beefsteak tomato plants this morning. I'm surprised no interest has been shown for this high quality flavoured garden tomato what is disease resistant. No hassle with late blight and/or early blight on the plants. Blight is like the Coronavirus, there is not much you can do about it, except for constant pruning and giving you numerous headaches. For two years (1973-1975) I studied the early blight fungus in the Holland Marsh. I got to know this fungus. I spied on it with help of a spy plane from National Defence and the maps from the Weather Department. I wrote a scientific paper on this Alternaria fungus, which is still being referenced today. If you want to grow a trouble free tomato plant, that has all defence mechanisms to wart off the blight fungus, this tomato is a must for the garden.
