You get a leaf, you get a leaf, and you get a leaf. EVERYBODY GETS A LEAF!

Ever wonder why so many trees drop their leaves during the fall time? The answer lies in the sun and water.

🍂 Plants get their energy and food through photosynthesis, a reaction between sunlight, water (from roots), and carbon dioxide (from air through the leaves). When light interacts with chlorophyll, the pigment that makes leaves green, it changes water and carbon dioxide into energy and oxygen.

🍂 While carbon dioxide is available year-round, the amount of sunlight and water available to plants fluctuates. During the winter, daylight hours are shorter and water is often frozen. Leaves lose moisture through the pores on their surface and can be damaged by frost, so photosynthesis is less efficient.

🍂 Deciduous trees that lose their leaves have evolved to be dormant during the winter to conserve energy and moisture. Evergreen trees adapted to grow tough leaves (needles) that can withstand harsh winter weather, allowing them to stay green and active year-round.

My mother kept a garden
A garden of the heart
She planted all the good things
That gave my life its start
She turned me to the sunshine
And encouraged me to dream
Fostering and nurturing
The seeds of self-esteem
And when the winds and rain came
She protected me enough
But not too much because she knew
I’d need to stand up strong and tough
Her constant good example
Always taught me right from wrong
Markers for my pathway
That will last a lifetime long
I am my mother’s garden
I am her legacy
