I love the organic ebb and flow of birth work. The last bit has been unexpectedly busy.

And now, there should be a slowdown ahead, though last-minute things tend to come up.

I’m grateful for a supportive husband and helpful children to hold down the fort while I get called away. And thankful to the families who invite me along on their sacred journeys. 💖

Tried dry-brining a whole chicken for the first time and it won’t be the last!

Super moist and tasty.

Fluffy homemade hamburger buns.

These come together quickly and easily.

10/10 recommend. Kid and husband approved.

We usually use an organic flour that is not technically white so it doesn’t have synthetic vitamins added to it, but it does produce a denser bread.

To win over the family I busted out the organic white flour and it did the trick— fluffy delicious buns.

If you know you know 🤣

A hot water tank can only do so much for you.

During most water births, someone’s on stove/kettle/instant pot duty and it’s usually me.

If you have a vessel that will heat water I will find it and use it. 🔥

I can’t guarantee outcomes.

I can guarantee you’ll be supported as much as is humanly possible while you walk your path.

I had a few weeks to go still before going on call at 36weeks when I got home from Algonquin to hear the news that this baby was arriving imminently.

When you can maintain your autonomy throughout the challenges, that counts for a lot.

So we pivoted. We did the best we could with the information we had in the moment.

That’s all we can ever do. 💖

Another golden nugget.

I think the one about Anti-D (RhoGAM) with Sara Wickham was my fave. They are all good, but particularly interesting ones were: the f%k1ing epidural; practicing overtly or covertly in the system; OP labours; Labour pauses … and so many more if you can get past the cackling 😜

These are the various ways I’m supporting women on their pregnancy, birthing, and postpartum journeys.

I’ll be stepping away from postpartum-specific care (don’t worry, it’s still part of birth packages) and leaning into pregnancy consults instead.

And to be honest, I’m not sure how much longer I’ll be wearing the doula hat for… it seems to add confusion for women and witnessing the distrust of birth in general and the sabotage again and again is getting old.

So stay tuned for changes coming in 2026 but for now this is what we’ve got!

We are always doing the best we can with the information we have in the moment.

…

And sometimes, the woman herself needs to the be the cheerleader of her birth team.

…

No one else can want a particular outcome more than she does.

…

When she is clear and confident, others will (hopefully) rise to meet her expectations.

…

It’s an unfortunate reality that the mother, in her liminal state, often needs to manage the feelings of the (regulated) professionals.

…

But she can. And it pays off. And I’m here to support her as she does so.
