Mi’kmaq History Month invites all people living in Mi’kma’ki to deepen their understanding of Mi’kmaq culture, language, and resilience. It is more than a commemoration — it is an ongoing invitation to relationship, respect, and responsibility.

In the field of social work and mental health, acknowledging Mi’kmaq History Month means recognizing that wellness and healing are deeply connected to land, culture, and community. Embedding Mi’kmaq knowledge and history into our practice is not optional; it is essential for ethical, culturally safe care.

Year-round, and especially this month, we are grateful for the contributions of Elders Albert and Murdena Marshall in their creation of the model of care, Etuaptmumk - Two-Eyed Seeing, that embeds the marrying of traditional Indigenous healing and western healing practices and recognizing the importance and value of both. At New Tide, we regularly spend time reflecting as a team on what it means to be "culturally safe", how to decolonize our practice, how to embed the Calls to Action and Calls for Justice in our work, and how to embed Etuaptmumk in the work that we do.

As part of Bullying Prevention Month, let’s talk about the long-term mental health effects of bullying in Canadian schools and workplaces.

What’s one thing you wish people understood about the long-term effects of bullying?

In your opinion, what’s one way schools or communities could better support people who’ve experienced bullying?

Did you know October is ADHD Awareness Month?

Did you also know that ADHD can look very different in girls than in boys?

While boys often show more hyperactive or impulsive behaviours (like fidgeting, blurting out answers, or constant movement), girls are more likely to show inattentive symptoms — daydreaming, quiet disorganization, or emotional overwhelm.
Because of this, many girls go undiagnosed, often being labeled as “shy,” “lazy,” or “anxious.”

💬 ADHD doesn’t look the same for everyone.

Many of us know, love, live with, or work with someone who lives with ADHD. One small act of kindness toward our neurodiverse friends might include working toward creating more safe and welcoming spaces.

What tweaks would you suggest for making our spaces more comfortable for our neurodiverse friends?

With World Mental Health Day tomorrow (Oct 10), we are sharing 5 self-care tips tailored for Canadians dealing with stress & uncertainty:

1. Get Outside, Even in the Cold: Exposure to natural light and fresh air can boost mood and regulate sleep, especially during long winters when Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) is common in Canada. Take a 10–15 minute walk outdoors daily—bundle up if needed.

2. Limit News Intake and Focus on Reliable Canadian Sources: Constant exposure to distressing news (especially during uncertain times) increases anxiety. Set boundaries — check updates once or twice a day from reputable outlets like CBC, The Globe and Mail, or Health Canada, then unplug. Replace doomscrolling with a calming routine (e.g., tea break or short breathing exercise).

3. Practice Mindfulness and Grounding: Mindfulness reduces stress and improves emotional regulation. Try free guided meditations through Mindfulness Everyday or Wellness Together Canada, a government-funded resource offering free online mental health tools and live counselling.

4. Connect Through Community: Social connection buffers stress and promotes resilience, especially in remote or isolated areas. Even Virtually, join local Facebook community groups, or check out Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA) programs for group support or workshops in your province.

5. Follow a “Canadian” Self-Care Routine for Balance: Structure brings comfort in uncertain times. This might look like maintaining a consistent sleep schedule (even when it’s dark early). Preparing nutritious comfort foods using local ingredients (like lentil soup, salmon, or root vegetables). Or ending your day with a gratitude reflection by listing three things that went right, even small ones.
