October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Did you know 71% of eligible Peel residents are up to date with breast cancer screening—but some communities still face barriers. Language, access, and stigma shouldn’t stand in the way of early detection. Together, we can close the gap.

Mental health care is a right, not a privilege.

On World Mental Health Day, we join our partners at CMHA Peel Dufferin in calling for a system where everyone has timely, equitable access to mental health and substance use health care.

Far too often, people are left waiting months for support, or unable to afford the care they need. CMHA Peel Dufferin is changing that reality. Through a stepped-care approach and strong community partnerships, they’ve reduced wait times from over 130 days to just 15, while improving pathways to housing, employment, and food security.

Their work reminds us that good mental health depends not only on access to services, but also on stable housing, income, safety, and belonging.

At Mississauga Health, we’re proud to work alongside CMHA Peel Dufferin and our partners across the region to strengthen community-based care and make mental health support available when and where it’s needed most.

✨Meet the Member: Indus Community Services✨

Indus Community Services has been serving our community for over 40 years — supporting newcomers, seniors, women, and families with essential services to help them thrive in Canada.

From settlement support and language training to housing assistance and employment guidance, Indus helps individuals feel welcomed and empowered as they navigate life in a new country.

Recently, Indus partnered with Mississauga Health and other local organizations on a colorectal cancer screening campaign, helping raise awareness and connect people to potentially life-saving early detection services. This kind of collaboration is a powerful example of what’s possible when organizations work together toward a shared goal: building a healthier, more inclusive community for all.

This May, we join communities across Canada in honouring Asian Heritage Month and its 2025 theme - Unity in Diversity: The Impact of Asian Communities in Shaping Canadian Identity.

Asian communities being a richness of cultures, histories, and experiences that continue to shape how we care for one another - in health and in the community.

We’re listening, learning, and working to build a system where every voice matters.

We’re helping people take charge of their mental health - one goal at a time.

Since May 2024, Mississauga Health has been using Brief Action Planning (BAP) to support clients experiencing mild-to-moderate depression and anxiety while they wait for care. BAP is a simple, structured approach that helps individuals set realistic, personalized health goals in short, supportive conversations - boosting confidence and improving outcomes.

Here’s what we’ve seen so far:
✅ 100+ clients have been supported
✅ 86% said BAP addressed their needs in a timely way
✅ 100% of repeat clients felt more confident in achieving their goals
✅ 7 minutes - the average time it takes to complete a BAP conversation
✅ 30+ staff trained since February 2025

Clients and intake workers alike are reporting powerful outcomes: stronger motivation, better accountability, and a clearer direction on how to take the next steps in their mental health journey.

We’ve also launched a Community of Practice in partnership with Mississauga Halton Self-Management Program. This space allows trained staff to apply their skills through realistic practice scenarios, share experiences, and grow their capacity to support clients in self-managing their health and well-being.

We’re proud to be building and connecting a system that helps people feel heard, empowered, and supported - right from the start.

May 7 is National Child & Youth Mental Health Day - a day to reflect on how we support young people’s mental wellness in a system under pressure.

At Mississauga Health, in partnership with Trillium Health Partners Institute for Better Health, we’ve been working to redesign mental health systems for those 25 and under. In the last year, we hosted 4 community engagement sessions with more than 50 participants - including youth, caregivers, and service providers.

Through patient journey mapping and deep dialogue, we uncovered shared challenges and identified new opportunities for collaboration. These insights are now helping partners shape better, more inclusive mental health programming across the community.

This is just the beginning - but it’s a powerful reminder of what’s possible when we come together and listen.
