Do you suspect or know you have ADHD? Our 12 week program offers a compliment or alternative to prescriptions for managing the symptoms and effects of having ADHD. First of all let’s start with the shame and should-ing on ourself that people experience - thoughts such as “I should have the discipline and willpower to just do what I need to do”, or “I should just know how to manage this stuff”. These types of thoughts aren’t helpful and are demotivating.

We offer a program that will help you to recognize that ADHD can be both a super power and our kryptonite. Stop should-ing on yourself and let’s chat about what actually works.

You’re not alone and you’re not expected to know how to fix this. Book a free consult call to learn more about how we can help!

Today is April 20th, otherwise known as 4/20 - you may have heard the term “Four Twenty” used before to allude to Cannabis use. This term was created in the 70’s and referred to 4:20 p.m. as the time many young teens would go outside after school to smoke ma*****na! The term 420 has expanded to include today’s date as a date to celebrate cannabis use.

As a Social Worker in Ontario, we used today as an opportunity to discuss Cannabis Use in Ontario and how it’s showing up in our offices as social workers and psychotherapists - in our emergency rooms - in our schools - and in our homes and families.

With the legalization of Cannabis in our Country, we are seeing families needing support for individual members and for the family as a whole to deal with the adverse effects Cannabis use can cause.

At Choosing Health Counselling we are not here to judge or lecture or to tell you what to do. We are here to listen, to share what we know, and to support individuals and families with their challenges and struggles and to hopefully achieve optimal health and wellness.

If Cannabis use is something that is affecting yourself or your family, please don’t hesitate to reach out and chat with us. Book a free consult call or initial appointment with our team to learn more about how we can support you. #420

Do you feel like you understand your experiences intellectually, but the emotional reactivity or pain is still stuck inside of you?

EMDR therapy helps the brain process distressing memories so they no longer feel as overwhelming in the present.

At Choosing Health Counselling, several of our therapists are trained in EMDR and support clients with trauma, anxiety, grief, and other experiences that may feel “stuck.”

Curious if EMDR might be helpful for you? Reach out to learn more.

🌟The power of having a Mantra🌟.

In some of the hardest times of my life, I’ve cultivated a mantra that comforted me and supported me through fears and doubts. Some of my favourites include: “I am not the first person and I won’t be the last to go through this” (this one helps to feel less alone in our struggles). With a loved one who was fighting some health concerns, we came up with this together: “I am healthy. I am strong. I am ok”. “This too shall pass”, is a commonly used one.

Mantras are more than just words — they’re anchors.
In moments of stress, self-doubt, or overwhelm, the thoughts in our minds can spiral quickly. A mantra interrupts that spiral. It gives your nervous system something steady to hold onto.

✨ A mantra can:
• Calm anxiety in the moment
• Shift negative self-talk
• Reinforce self-worth
• Build emotional resilience
• Help you respond instead of react

The key? Repetition + belief + practice.
When you repeat a phrase consistently, your brain begins to create new neural pathways. Over time, that statement becomes easier to access — especially when you need it most.

Some more examples:
🖤 “I can do hard things.”
🖤 “This feeling will pass.”
🖤 “I am safe right now.”
🖤 “Progress, not perfection.”
🖤 “I am worthy of care and respect.”

A mantra isn’t about pretending everything is okay. It’s about choosing a grounding truth when your mind is telling you a distorted story.

If you don’t have one yet, try this:
Notice the negative thought you return to most often — then gently write the opposite, compassionate truth.
Your words matter. Especially the ones you say to yourself.

⁉️Wonder why fidget and squish toys are so popular?⁉️

Fidget toys are popular because they offer sensory regulation, improve concentration, and reduce stress by providing a physical outlet for nervous energy or boredom. They are widely used to boost focus and calm anxiety, making them helpful tools for managing focus-related issues like ADHD and autism.

💙Sensory and Emotional Regulation: Fidgets provide tactile input that can help ground people, reduce anxiety, and manage “big emotions”.

💛 Improved Focus and Cognitive Benefits: Contrary to the idea that they are distracting, fidget toys can actually help individuals—particularly those with ADHD—by providing just enough stimulation to keep their minds engaged on a primary task, such as listening or working.

💚 Release of Excess Energy: They provide a quiet, non-disruptive way to release fidgety energy in classrooms or workspaces, preventing the need for more distracting behaviors like tapping feet or shifting in seats.

💜 Dopamine Boost and Stress Relief: Manipulating these toys can help trigger the brain’s reward system, increasing dopamine levels, which reduces stress and brings a sense of calm.
