Ashwagandha is one of the most researched adaptogens for women in perimenopause, and one that I use often in the clinic.

Ashwagandha is a nutritive herb that has many actions, but is mainly used to:

✨ Support stress resilience and adrenal gland function
✨ Improve sleep quality (reduce nighttime waking)
✨ Impact hormones like thyroid and reproductive hormones (estrogen, progesterone, testosterone).

But here’s what is most important to know: Quality matters and can determine whether your ashwagandha actually works.

Look for:
✅ Standardized extracts that guarantee active withanolides (the key compounds that make it effective).
✅ Third-party testing to ensure purity (free of heavy metals, pesticides, and fillers).
✅ Clinical potency: around 300–600 mg/day of standardized extract.

My favourite product is Ashwagandha SAP. It checks all of the boxes and gives me the results that I am looking for.

One reason is that estrogen supports healthy melatonin rhythms and the circadian clock that controls sleep-wake cycles. When estrogen becomes erratic - as it does in perimenopause - melatonin secretion also becomes erratic, which makes it harder to fall asleep at night.

By menopause, melatonin production stays low, and the body often adjusts - meaning sleep is less disrupted as it is during perimenopause.

Tip: Try 3 mg of melatonin nightly for 30 days to support sleep across both high- and low-estrogen weeks. Track how long it takes to fall asleep, daytime energy, and mood to see if it’s helping.

Did you know music can actually change how your body experiences exercise? It helps:
- Reduce fatigue & perceived effort
- Boost endurance
- Improve mood
- Regulate breathing & heart rate

I remember a colleague doing a study on this when I was in my undergrad at Acadia University. I found it really interesting to discover that music is a tool to support both the nervous system and physical performance.

I'm not habitually a runner, but I will say that I have been voluntarily going out for a jog to listen to the 'K-Pop Demon Hunters' soundtrack 😊

Not that we don't listen to it enough around the house. Anyone else with me on this?

Playing recreational sports has been an important part of my emotional well-being. It's fun, physically challenging, and provides community & connection - all things I lost touch with while raising kids.

I always enjoy seeing "cosmetic acupuncture" come up in my work schedule. People often find this a relaxing & rejuvenating session - I love being a part of people's self-care routine!

If you don't know what cosmetic acupuncture is, basically it is a non-invasive way to support skin health by stimulating circulation, collagen production, and facial muscle tone to reduce the appearance of fine lines and acne scarring, and improve skin texture.

It is a full one-hour treatment that includes inserting special acupuncture needles on the face/head and I often include other points depending on someone's overall health goals (hormones, digestion, sleep, etc). We also use light therapy and skincare products like toner, B serum, hyaluronic acid, and a moisturizer to complete the treatment.

And, in case you were wondering, it is covered under acupuncture or naturopath by most extended health insurance coverage plans.

A great tip about sleep in perimenopause from the ever-inspiring Dr. Renée Purdy, ND 💖

Having a hard time with your sleep? 😵‍💫 You keep hearing that sleep is one of the pillars of health, especially in perimenopause and menopause, and that you should sleep like it's your job? That's all true, but if you can't sleep, it may feel like a downward spiral. Sleep struggles are super common during perimenopause...

Here are some common sleep disruptors:
⏰ Hormonal fluctuations (especially changes in progesterone) can make it harder to fall or stay asleep
💥 Night sweats and high stress - common sleep disruptors
🥱 Blood sugar crashes and cortisol spikes can also wake you up in the middle of the night - wake up and can't get your mind to slow down?

🌿 Here are some general sleep supporting strategies I like to use:
🧘🏽‍♀️ Calming and consistent bedtime routine (even add some red-light therapy if you have access)
🍽 Balanced evening meal and even a protein-rich snack before bed (try some Greek yoghurt, for example), some people find this makes a huge difference, especially if a blood sugar crash is happening
🕯 Dimming lights 1-2 hours before sleep (avoid scrolling before bed).
✨ Try Magnesium bisglycinate before bed

These can be a good place to start, but a more individualized approach may be helpful for you!
