Many children and teens are feeling socially anxious after the forced isolation COVID has created. Music therapy can help.

“Using improvisation in a safe setting helped with the idea of making things up as you go along, and feeling more comfortable with this concept. To all intents and purposes, that is essentially what many social situations require.”

As many as one in eight UK children aged five to 19 faces a mental health challenge. Here's how music can help.

(VISUAL DESCRIPTION: A graphic with a rainbow coloured background with the words: Anti-Oppressive Music Therapy? Clients are perceived as being specialists of their own lives (Baines, 2013). In order to practice AOP music therapy, a music therapist must, “seek to change the system and other societal oppressive structures that negatively affect universal developmental potential,” (Baines, 2013, p. 4). There is a cartoon of four people holding each other looking at a firework in the bottom left of the graphic.)

Anti-oppressive practice (AOP) describes a theoretical orientation found in the helping professions which believes that the core of clients’ issues is related to systems that perpetrate inequal power dynamics (Baines, 2007).

AOP grew out of the work of Black and Indigenous feminist psychotherapists, counsellors and social workers who found that feminist therapeutic paradigms were predominantly Eurocentric and did not acknowledge the intersections between marginalized identities (Timothy & Garcia, 2020). AOP assumes that the different systems of oppression like racism, ableism, colonization, colourism, misogyny, transphobia and heteronormativity are important to the therapeutic work itself (Scrine & Stanger, 2019). It understands that the therapy room does not inherently dissolve these power dynamics and that therapists must work to create level ground in session by addressing the systems at play (Baines, 2007). It believes that there are no objective contexts within which therapy operates and that every therapist must think about how our actions in therapy uphold or challenge unjust systems (Brown, 2019).

(VISUAL DESCRIPTION: A graphic with pastel rainbow coloured background with the question: Do you know what happens in a music therapy session? Yes! NO!)

Music therapy sessions may include musical improvisations about feelings, situations, or themes, singing or playing meaningful pre-composed songs, creating purposeful playlists, songwriting, listening and talking about music, playing percussion or electronic instruments, or playing musical “games” …

Basically, there is no “typical session” because every music therapy session is different!

Music therapists follow the unique in-the-moment needs of our clients.

Musical explorations can allow clients to express their feelings, ideas, and experiences. Music therapists listen and support what clients express through active listening, verbal reflections, and through their own music-making.

What did you think happened in a music therapy session?

Music therapy can be a great tool to cope with the psychological impact of the pandemic!

La musicothérapie peut être un outil formidable pour faire face à l'impact de la pandémie !

Even when forced online by the pandemic, music therapy sessions continue to help patients in some ways talk therapy can't. "Music is this portal," says one therapist and COVID-19 long-hauler.
