Self-care talk:

Has self-care become the broken-record-of-topics these days?

At what point does over-saturation lead to positive change, such as better societal education on a topic, OR achieve the opposite, such as worsen related problems due to tuning out redundant messages?

Last week, a home-visit to a new client took me to an unfamiliar part of town. Being a relatively new driver, it still makes me nervous to drive to new places, and predictably, I felt anxious on my drive over.

Driving home along the unfamiliar path, however, I was treated to an unexpected and enthralling view of the city’s skyline! My face twisted into the most ridiculous wide grin, and I was filled with such excitement and joy! What a rush!

The situation reminded me of the potential payoff when we allow ourselves to try something new. While it can be terrifying and make you confront feelings of failure, there can also be feelings of joy and thrill.

Last post, I described how anxious going to the grocery store made me. In the store, I tried to reduce the anxiety by focusing on the things around me that would help me feel better, e.g. people smiling.

When I got home, I danced to feel better and change my mood for the better.

The endorphins from the exercise, the enjoyment of the song I chose and the overall association of dancing and good times helped chip away at the leftover "ick" from the store.

Suggestion: When you're blue and you don't know what to do, put on the ritz OR if you're a Grey's Anatomy fan, have a dance party à la Meredith Grey!

A few weeks ago I was in a particularly long line at the grocery store. I couldn't help but register the overwhelming anxiety in the room... It was so noxious that I felt my thoughts start to slip into dread and I started imagining any number of terrifying situations.....
..then I caught myself, and decided to only focus on what could lift my spirits.

I noticed some friendly eye-smiles and exchanges between people who obviously hadn't seen each other in a while.

Suggestion of the day: choose a moment to focus on the happy, friendly things happening around you.
