Language and culture are so inseperable! Let’s preserve them in Eeyou Istchee!

More than 70 distinct Indigenous languages are currently spoken by First Nations people, Métis and Inuit in Canada. Inuktitut, Cree languages and Innu (Montagnais) are the Indigenous languages spoken predominantly at home.

In 2021, over one-quarter (27.7%) of Indigenous language speakers learned their language as a second language, up from 24.8% in 2016.

Speech and Hearing Awareness Month!

Did you know that May is Speech and Hearing Awareness Month?

Communication is part of everyday life. Children communicate from birth. They look at you, they smile, they scream, they laugh... They develop language through their interactions with the world. You can help by talking to them at any age.

Language stimulation can be done anywhere, anytime and in any language.

Post a picture to show us your way to do it! Whether it’s at camp, in the kitchen, at the playground, we want to see you in action. There will be 3 prizes, 1 picture = 1 spot.
