To anyone who needs a bit of encouragement and support getting out of the pandemic rut:

We hear you. The world feels like it's changing so rapidly, that it is moving on from a deeply difficult time, leaving many of us stuck in the remnants of the pandemic. This is because recreation can help us access our joy and purpose to ultimately live our fullest, most unapologetic lives. This is why we have developed a self-care subscription that brings these activities to you based on recreational therapy principles and theories straight to your inbox every month. We are confident that this subkit could help everyone, regardless of where you are in your journey, in recovering from the pandemic and feeling like ourselves again (or perhaps, for the first time). It's today and we're so honoured to have Quanay, a.k.a RecOutLoud with us!

"The name of the online shop RecOutLoud is meant to serve as a reminder that the work we do as TR professionals change lives and we should be proud of it. We should share it with the world.

Hey! I’m Quanay and I have been a CTRS since 2015 working in the community setting in Indiana. After being in the field for nearly 7 years I noticed that there was not a ton of gear for Rec Therapists. This marked the beginning of a new adventure. After some in-depth research, I decided that I was going to have to design this RT specific merchandise myself. Time goes by, self-doubt rolls in, a lot of encouragement from my support system, and a leap of faith later I launch the Rec Out Loud Instagram page and online shop.

aims to create designs that provoke conversation and allow the TR Community to confidently promote and advocate for the profession. Rec Out Loud hopes to continue to grow within the community and empower current and future TR professionals."

Whether chanted, whispered, or siliently recited, a mantra is a powerful meditation tool. The word comes from two Sanskrit words - manas (mind) and tra (tool). Science shows that a mantra can help free your mind of background chatter and calm your nervous system. It doesn't matter what words you use, as long as you repeat something with focused attention. That said, with consistency, your mantra will stop being just words and will become a living energy that begin to shift your state!

Practice: Start by lying down or siting in a comforable position. Silently repeat the mantra, once on the inhale, and once on the exhale. Relax your face. If your mind wanders, simply notice them, and then return to the mantra. A few minutes a day is a great start.

Which mantra from this list inspires you? Do you have another mantra that you love?

It's ! This week, we're introducing Kateline ().

Kateline completed a kinesiology undergrad and masters before becoming a recreation therapy assistant and deciding to pursue school in rec therapy. She recently completed her CTRS certification and is in her second year of being a recreation therapist in long-term care. Due to past experience in seniors living, her passion is bringing independent seniors living and assisted living style programming to long-term care. She firmly believes that while long-term care is a senior's last stop in life, they do not stop living when they enter the doors. Kateline dreams of community access, increased leisure education, and more vibrancy in care settings in the future. Outside of her full-time position, she has worked as a private companion and teaches fitness classes for adults with developmental disabilities. Kateline’s favourite leisure activities include hiking, kayaking/SUP, and just relaxing in the mountains! Thanks for sharing your story with us Kateline!

This , we're looking at Kyarah ()!

"I am currently working as a recreation professional in a long-term care home in Kingston, Canada. I have a diploma in Social Service Work and a Post Grad Certificate in Therapeutic Recreation. What I love about this career is the fact that every day is a different adventure. In my field, I am blessed to connect with my residents and learn their stories. You gain some connections you will never forget. The amazing part is seeing the activities I provide bringing joy into their days and finding positive outlets for my residents. I think advocation is something that is really important in this career so we continue to be recognized as valuable members of the care team. I am very passionate about this career and the people I get to work with every day. I love to continue learning and growing both as an individual and as a professional.” Follow and connect with Kyarah at on Instagram!

It's ! Today, we are featuring Michaella (Mishella) who has been a CTRS for the last 4 years.

"I graduated from the University of Regina with a degree in Sport & Recreation Studies, majoring in Therapeutic Recreation and also have a minor in Psychology!

My passion is to work with individuals with a history of mental health, addiction, and homelessness! I have had the privilege to work with at-risk youth, homeless populations, addiction, mental health, geriatrics in acute care and long-term care setting!

I deeply want our profession to be regulated and protected to keep our vulnerable clients safe while keeping us RecT’s ACCOUNTABLE.

From the last 5 years of working in this profession, my advice is to keep on advocating and networking, it’s gotten me so far! The more you network the more people you have in your circle of support who know the struggle."

It's ! This week, we are highlighting 's story.

"My name is Caroline and I am currently working as a geriatric recreational therapist at a long term care pavilion in a hospital in Montreal, Canada. For as long as I can remember, I’ve had a passion for elder care and a strong desire to improve the quality of life of one of our most vulnerable populations, seniors. In our society and in long term care (LTC), ageing can often be seen as a process of physical and cognitive decline, where the patient is seen as a recipient of care within a biomedical model. As a consequence, older adults are known to experience isolation, depression, boredom, and loneliness. My approach to therapeutic recreation service delivery is to develop person- and relationship-centred care. The person, not their diagnosis or abilities, is at the centre of all recreation and care services. No matter what physical or cognitive challenges people face, everyone has the right to experience meaningful leisure, improvements to quality of life, and overall well-being. My career is more than just a job- it is an enriching experience from which I continue to learn every day. The relationships I develop with patients is what motivates me to excel and develop impactful opportunities for life enrichment. I truly feel grateful for the meaningful and rewarding work I get to do every day!"

It's another post ✨ This week, we are sharing Fiona Allen's voice and story.

"Fiona ( on Instagram) has her BS in Kinesiology from Cal Poly and her MS in Community and Therapeutic Recreation from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. She has been a CTRS since 2016 and has worked as a Recreation Therapist in a variety of settings. Fiona started her own private practice, Avocation Therapy, in the fall of 2020 in Bryan, TX. She currently provides RT in Texas through the YES Medicaid Waiver program, is an approved provider for Supplemental Special Education Services through Texas Education Agency, and offers home and community-based services. Fiona also works part-time as a Disability Accessible Trail Specialist with AllTrails, helping to create more accessible outdoor opportunities for people with disabilities. An avocation is someone's true interest or passion and Fiona loves to help people with disabilities discover their passions through Recreational Therapy."

This week's we have Carlie Provow, the face behind (on Instagram)!

"I started my journey as a CTRS like most of us did. I just happened to stumble upon this wonderful profession while struggling in college. I was pursuing the wrong major and struggling through every bit of it. Defeated after bombing an exam I decided to visit the academic advisor's office. My advisor talked to me about OT, Special Education and TR. I was amazed when hearing about Therapeutic Recreation and decided to take the plunge into the TR world and haven’t looked back.

During my time at Central Michigan University (fire up chips!) I completed two internships. My first in an inpatient psychiatric facility for adult and geriatric clients in the Central Michigan area. The other internship with an adaptive parks and recreation department on the west side of Michigan.

After graduation in 2018, I worked for two years in the Adult and Geriatric Psychiatric facility where I completed my internship. I was grateful for the opportunity to start my career with the best of coworkers and an area I was already familiar with.

When COVID hit my husband and I decided that we desperately needed a change. We decided to move away from Michigan. I accepted a job at Champaign-Urbana Special Recreation (CUSR) located in Champaign, IL. I am currently the Youth & Teen Coordinator for our facility! I have been working here since September 2020 and I have loved every hectic minute of it! We offer an array of programs to our participants including an after school program, 10-week long summer camp, Therapeutic Horseback Riding, karate, a variety of themed events, as well as Athletics and Adult Programs!"
