As we wrapped up the final week of the winter semester, we were greeted by snow flurries that danced around us, some delightful sunny days, and the birds calling in the spring.

The children had opportunities to immerse themselves in blackberry removal, engage in creative activities, use their imagination to explore around them and appreciate the first blossoms beginning to emerge from their winter slumber. It was a truly magical way to conclude our time together this winter term.

As Spring slowly creeps into the forest, we are greeted by the wonderful Osoberry bush, also commonly known as the Indian Plum. The new budding leaves are a fresh reminder of how abundant the forest is. Have you tasted any Oso leaves yet? If so, what vegetable does it remind you of? 🤔🍃☀️

Our first week of March came rolling in with the Forest School Cooperative attending the wonderful Seedy Sunday Event at NDSS. Thank you to everyone who stopped by the booth, whether it was to say hello, pick out a seed or two, or purchase one of Michael Geselbracht well-loved trees. And thanks to our wonderful team for all their hard work connecting and making the day happen!

The 3–6 year old program has been deeply immersed in the curiosity of throwing many of our mud kitchen tools into the stream at one of our sites.

As adults, instead of shutting it down, we chose to get curious too. What was the draw? The sound of it hitting the water? The thrill of throwing in something that shouldn't be thrown in? The disappearance of the item? The cause and effect?

To honour the ongoing inquiry, we created space to explore the next question that naturally came up. How would we get them back out? Long sticks? Wait till summer when the water dries up?

Then magnets entered the picture, old speaker magnets tied securely to rope. What followed was a world of wonder and excitement. The thrill of throwing and retrieving. The anticipation of whether something would “catch.” The shared celebration when it did.

What began as tossing tools into the stream unfolded into exploration, problem-solving, collaboration, and deep engagement. Curiosity leading curiosity.

The forest day has been gifted with warm sunny weather but cooler still cooler temperatures for our little reptilian friends. We found this European Wall Lizard who was still in his state of dormancy. We made sure we gave him a safe space to hide while we get into the warmers days. The children were fascinated by the state of how lizards go into a stated of brumation to stay alive during the colder months.

Nature is so cool! 🦎❄️💤
