Earth Week in Nelson, come celebrate!

The Backstory of Earth Week 2025 – Nelson, BC 🌍

In November 2024, four passionate members of the West Kootenay Climate Hub sat down over coffee with a simple question: "What if we plan Earth Day this year?"

At first, Earth Day just meant - maybe? - organizing a parade. But then we wondered, what if we get creative about this?

We asked:
✨ What excites us about this planet?
✨ How can we spark that excitement in others?

A brainstorming session led to community connections, overflowing creativity, and an outpouring of support. The result?
Earth Week 2025 – a full week of free events celebrating the resilience of our planet and the spirit of our community.

From last year’s modest booth and art table at Taghum Hall, we now have:

🌿 25 unique events over 7 days
🎭 A costumed parade led by the Moving Mosaic Samba Band
🌍 Nature walks, a ReDesign Innovation Competition, Lalin choir soundscape, Green Film Festival, Solution Cafés, and more
🚲 A bike-powered smoothie machine finale at the Nelson and District Youth Centre

All made possible by the work of dedicated volunteers, and the support of community-minded sponsors like:

💚 Kootenay Co-op
💚 The Hume Hotel

Some of our members were present for this Sue Big Oil !

Thanks Greg and Therin for the awesome presentation on at Regional District of Central Kootenay's Board meeting yesterday. And thanks to everyone who came out to support, or who attended online. It's critical that our local governments understand the climate costs that taxpayers are already paying, while fossil fuel corporations rake in absurd profits. Joining the campaign is one way to recoup some of those costs.
