Real experience is where everything comes together. Our Health Care Assistant students recently spent time at Hamilton Village Care Centre as part of their practicum, where they gained hands-on experience in a professional healthcare environment.

From observing patient care to understanding how teams operate, this experience gives students a clearer picture of what to expect in the field.

Meet AJ, our ECEA instructor. His approach focuses on helping students feel prepared for real childcare environments from the start, building practical skills, confidence, and a clear understanding of working with children.

In the classroom, it’s about more than just learning content. It’s about creating a space where students can grow, develop patience, and build the skills they’ll carry into their careers.

One of the requirements to work as an Early Childhood Education Assistant in a licensed childcare facility in BC is to be certified by the Early Childhood Educator (ECE) Registry. The Early Childhood Education Assistant program offered by Kootenay Columbia College is not recognized by the ECE Registry. This means that upon graduation, students will have to apply for certification through the ECE Registry’s equivalency process. Only one of the courses is required to apply for an ECEA with the ECE Registry. For more information about the process, visit the ECE Registry website.

Massage therapy is a field that brings together hands-on work, clinical knowledge, and real interaction with people. It’s not just about learning techniques, it’s about understanding how the body moves, how recovery happens, and how to support clients in a meaningful way over time.

For many, the flexibility of the work and the variety of settings make it a practical and sustainable path.

Acupuncture focuses on restoring balance within the body to help reduce discomfort and support long-term wellness. Practitioners work with clients experiencing pain, stress, and a wide range of health concerns by addressing the body as a whole rather than isolated symptoms.

Education for Heart and Mind

Kootenay Columbia College of Integrative Health Sciences (formerly the Academy of Classical Oriental Sciences) is situated right in the heart of downtown Nelson, BC. Founded in 1996 as a Traditional Chinese Medicine school, Joanne Sinclaire took leadership in 2014 and forged two new programs: Registered Massage Therapy Program and the Holistic Nutrition Certificate Program. A former teacher and student of the Academy, Joanne sought to bring health services education based on practical, hands-on experience to the Kootenays. Our students are able to provide local Kootenay residents with excellent care at an affordable price, improving their clients’ health and quality of life while honing their own practical skills through clinical practice. Our exceptional faculty of instructors share their knowledge and professional experience through a wide range of learning environments that include "hands-on" labs, traditional classroom as well as a student clinic setting.
