An essential reminder: sugar is pervasive, comprising added sugars, fruit sugars, and carbohydrates that transform into glucose in the body.

St. John's Wort

I planted this healing beauty a few years ago and now it is everywhere around the acerage.. including the neighbour's. I have even found it mixed with the wildflowers on the sides of our roads when we take our walks.
I remember the first medicinal herb garden I fell in love with. It was in the garden at Lang Century Village where I volunteered as a costumed tour guide from the time I was nine years old. I grew up in that little village in summers. Making beeswax candles over the open fire at the Fife Cabin... Sunday tea at the Hotel..and some days spent in the School House. By far my favourite place to demonstrate was the Fitzpatrick House. I just felt very at home in that sweet house... and the garden that grew just outside the kitchen. It was definitely a kitchen garden and taught me most everything I do today... but one section was devoted entirely to medicinal herbs... Feverfew, Chamomile, Horehound, Borage, Hyssop, Echinacea, Valerian and many more including St .John's Wort. Gathering the flowers as they bloom and steeping them in glass jars filled with grapeseed oil or coconut oil out in the sun for a couple of days, straining the flowers away and adding the crimson red oil to a base of melted beeswax and setting it in glass jars makes a soothing healing balm for cuts, burns, bites, and rashes. We also add the dried flowers to our 'Serenity Now' tea blend.
I always say I can smell Lang in the air here... even with three provinces between us. The dirt roads, cooking over a hearth, the horses, the wooden floors... I even have a Wildwood Scented Geranium that I insist smells like Lang.
A living museum that lives in this gals' heart forever. ๐Ÿ’—

There is a significant connection between inflammation and sugar consumption. Here's a brief overview:

Consuming high amounts of sugar can lead to chronic inflammation in the body, which is associated with various health issues, including:

1. Insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes
2. Obesity and metabolic syndrome
3. Cardiovascular disease
4. Cancer
5. Alzheimer's disease and other neurodegenerative disorders

The connection works like this:

1. Sugar consumption triggers the release of pro-inflammatory cytokines, which are molecules that promote inflammation.
2. A high-sugar diet can lead to an overgrowth of harmful gut bacteria, which produce lipopolysaccharides, a potent inflammatory trigger.
3. Sugar can also cause inflammation by increasing the production of advanced glycation end products (AGEs), which are substances that form when sugar binds to proteins or lipids in the body.

To reduce inflammation and promote overall health, it's essential to limit sugar intake and focus on a balanced diet rich in whole, nutrient-dense foods, including fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats.
