🌟 Debunking Diastasis Recti Myths! 🌟

With research and guidelines changing it can be hard to stay up to date on what’s myth and what’s fact! Here are some common myths and their facts about diastasis recti:

🔍 Myth #1: Diastasis recti is a tearing of the abdominal muscles.
Fact: It's actually a stretching of the linea alba (connective tissue) between the abdominal muscles, not a tear!

🔍 Myth #2: Only pregnancy causes diastasis recti.
Fact: While common during pregnancy, it can also occur in men, athletes, or anyone experiencing prolonged pressure on the abdominal wall.

🔍 Myth #3: The wider the gap, the more serious it is.
Fact: The tension in the linea alba matters more than the gap size. Functional strength is key, not just the width of the separation.

🔍 Myth #4: It needs immediate treatment, and exercise isn’t effective years later.
Fact: It’s never too late to address diastasis recti! Targeted exercises can improve function and strength, even years later.

✨ Education is power—don’t let myths hold you back from recovery or movement!

Struggling with a bulging tummy, back pain, or leakage? It might be diastasis recti! This condition, where your abdominal muscles separate via the linea alba, can weaken your core and impact your pelvic floor, leading to discomfort. Since the core and pelvic floor work together, when one struggles, the other often does too.

💪 A pelvic floor physiotherapist can assess your diastasis and pelvic floor, guide you through personalized exercises, and help you safely rebuild strength. Whether you’re postpartum or experiencing these symptoms for other reasons, pelvic floor physio can help you move, lift, and live with confidence again!

Over the next two weeks I’ll be posting more about myths of diastasis recti and how I assess for it! If you’d like an assessment call the clinic at 902-755-4093 or use the link in my bio!

🎆 How Physiotherapy Can Help You Achieve Your New Year’s Resolutions

It’s that time of year when many of us set resolutions to improve our health, fitness, and well-being. Whether your goal is to get stronger, run a race, or simply move pain-free, physiotherapy can help! Here’s how:

1. Prevent Injuries While Exercising
Starting a new workout routine can put stress on your body, especially if you’re new to exercise or increasing intensity. A physiotherapist can assess your posture, strength, and mobility, providing personalized guidance to reduce your risk of injuries.

2. Recover Faster and Smarter
If you’re dealing with an existing injury or recurring aches, physiotherapy can help you heal properly while staying active. Physiotherapists use techniques like manual therapy, exercises, and movement corrections to promote recovery and prevent setbacks.

3. Improve Strength, Flexibility, and Balance
Resolutions like “getting fit” require more than just motivation—they require a body that’s ready to move well. Physiotherapy can target muscle imbalances and joint restrictions, helping you improve strength, flexibility, and balance for long-term results.

Call us today for your assessment! We’d love to help you reach your goals!

❄️ Snow season is here, and while shoveling can be a great workout, it can also be hard on your body if not done correctly. Avoid back pain and injuries with these shoveling tips:

1️⃣ Warm Up First: Take 5–10 minutes to stretch and get your muscles ready. Focus on your back, shoulders, and legs.
2️⃣ Use Your Legs: Bend your knees and lift with your legs, not your back. Keep your spine straight and avoid twisting.
3️⃣ Light Loads: Don’t overfill your shovel. It’s better to take smaller scoops and work at a steady pace.
4️⃣ Switch Sides: Alternate which hand is leading on the shovel to avoid overloading one side of your body.
5️⃣ Take Breaks: Shoveling is a workout! Rest every 15–20 minutes to prevent fatigue and strain.

Your health matters—shovel smart this winter! If you’re feeling pain after shoveling, Back to Basics Physiotherapy is here to help. Book an appointment today! 💪

Pelvic floor physiotherapy can play a vital role in managing prostate-related issues. Here’s how it helps:

1. Improves Bladder Control: Many individuals experience urinary incontinence after prostate surgery. Pelvic floor exercises strengthen the muscles responsible for bladder control, reducing leakage and helping regain confidence.

2. Eases Pelvic Pain: Individuals with chronic prostatitis or other prostate conditions often have pelvic pain or discomfort. Pelvic floor therapy can help relax tight muscles, reduce tension, and relieve pain.

3. Enhances Sexual Health: Strengthening pelvic floor muscles can improve blood flow and support sexual function, often leading to better erectile control and overall sexual health.

4. Speeds Up Recovery: By learning targeted exercises before surgery, individuals can be better prepared for post-operative recovery. After surgery, these exercises aid in regaining muscle function and control more effectively.

Pelvic floor physiotherapy offers a non-invasive approach to managing prostate health issues, promoting recovery, comfort, and quality of life.
