Hi, my name is Lori Hurd, pharmacy manager at Save On Foods Sapperton. I love to run - I have completed 7 half-marathons, a few 10km events and a sprint triathlon in the last 8 years. I would love to help my community in New Westminster get healthy and social, so I am starting a run group every Tuesday starting April 25! Based on interest and ability, we may either split into a walking vs running group, or we may have a walking clinic for the first 6 weeks, followed by a run clinic the next 6 weeks. It is the end of an era...After opening Thrifty Foods Sapperton in 2011 and then Save On Foods Sapperton in 2014, I have loved being your neighbourhood pharmacist and getting to know the area in New Westminster and Sapperton better, getting to see what makes it so unique, and most of all meeting all my lovely patients and runners, hearing your stories and seeing your faces week after week. I will be moving to Save On Foods Ironwood in Richmond and my last shift in Sapperton will be Weds Oct 4th. Please stop by and say goodbye, or if you are in Richmond in the future, come in to say hello! And make sure to welcome your new pharmacy manager Doris into Sapperton and show her what a great community you are:) I will miss running with you but please make sure you continue to keep healthy and social - chat with Queen's Park Running Club if you would like to join a great crew of runners or start your very own Sapperton run group - change is scary but necessary, embrace it!

What happens when you swap your beef for beans?

It’s easy to get overwhelmed trying to improve your health and protect the planet. But simply swapping your beef for beans is one of the easiest ways you can protect BOTH.

A 100g serving of black beans will deliver the same amount of protein as a 100g serving of beef. But the beans will deliver more than 2x the iron, 5x the calcium and 7x the magnesium! Beans are also an excellent source of fibre and an antioxidant called anthocyanins, which have been proven to prevent the growth of cancers in the human body.

And according to a study at Loma Linda University, the production of 1KG of protein from beans requires approximately 18x less land, 12x less fertiliser, 10x less water and 9x less fuel when compared with 1KG of protein from beef!

In a recent article in Time magazine, it was said that “there may be no other single human activity that has a bigger impact on the earth than the raising of livestock.” Beans, on the other hand, have been listed as one of the foods with the least emissions per calorie on the planet.

Guys, I am so sad, summer is coming to a close and we are losing daylight fast! I am afraid that after tonight we won't be doing any more 8:15pm runs until next spring. However, we will still try to do the early morning 8am Saturday runs a few times per month during the winter months. We also may do a few runs earlier on Tuesdays by request, and possibly a fun night run or two by request (with headlamps or staying urban under streetlights, we will have to get creative). Happy running everyone :)
