People sometimes ask me: "what brought you to the mental health field?"
Although most may think that as therapists we have it together, at the core of it all, we are human too. I did not start off as a good communicator. I would say that that is a skill that has only grown and changed for me in the last 8 years.
Needing to take care of myself, is where my journey began. As a young teen to young adult, I did not communicate emotions and thoughts well. It was like there was an impassable block. I began doing a lot of visual arts, where I even explored mental health. This really imposed some tough reflections and through that exploration, I was able to find my voice. With deep reflection, wisdom and a constant openness to learn from experiences, I developed an interest to pursue a career linked to mental health.
Even now in the field, I still have so much to learn, but I know that what drives me is to help others build their own coping skills, to create authentic human connections and to continue learning so that I may always grow as an individual and a practitioner.
I think it's time I open the conversation about who I am and what makes me a good therapist. More to come in future posts.
