GOOD NEWS MOMENT! 🙏🏼

Plans to visit our friends in Africa have been in the works for 14 years. We didn’t plan for any projects, but a few days into our trip we met a family in need and our hearts exploded at the chance to help!!

This family is 5 children were orphaned a number of years ago, and still live alone.

We discovered a horrible infestation of bed bugs, living in the walls, mattresses, and doors of the home.

The children explained that they eat once per day at school. On weekends and holidays they often don’t eat.

The children told us they are horribly bullied at school 😢. If a pen goes missing, the other kids will say “those kids beg and don’t have parents, so they probably took it.”

We’ve met with village leaders twice to get their input, and they have explained that despite their circumstances, these kids are GOOD KIDS. The older boys don’t fight or steal and even their neighbor confirmed this! The girl is FIRST in her class and the boys are top 10!

We’ve been busy working out a plan & are SO EXCITED to share that this family will receive:

1. Food & ongoing support for the entire next year!!

2. School fees for all 5 kids, including uniforms, backpacks, shoes, and books

3. A fully renovated home & a safe space for these amazing kiddos to call their own. (This includes fumigating their home, repairing the concrete, adding a rain catchment tank & small a garden, new windows, new doors for a safe shower, bathroom, kitchen etc. We are partnering with local professionals for this!)

4. Replacing furniture, beds, window coverings, clothes & mosquito nets, and filling their home with things like cleaning & cooking tools, dishes, a cupboard for storing things away, lotion, basins for washing, etc.

5. A caretaker to come in a help every day for the next year.

6. Medical insurance for the year!

Ongoing support for this organization will ensure these amazing kids are looked after this year and beyond. We are so lucky to be a part of these first steps!!

Greetings from Africa! West Oak has gone international for 6 weeks & we thought we’d share a few favorite of our highlights from our time here so far! Our family has long been planning this trip to visit dear friends of ours with an incredible organization here in Africa. We feel so blessed to finally be here!

1. Ben & Amy visiting land that our friends have been given. They are running a program that helps children suffering from malnutrition here, but have big plans like schools in the works, too!
2. Planning & designing a new kitchen space for the malnutrition program… we weren’t much help, but we do love talking kitchens!
3. Our friends have taken us to visit a few families that their organization supports
4 & 5. Part of their program involves bringing food to families in need & we were lucky enough to come along!
6. Making cookies with our roomies for the next few weeks
7-9. Seeing our kids altogether is all kinds of dreams come true for us ♥️
10. Amy visited here 14 years ago & visited the area she lived for 3 months back in 2019!

Renos hardly ever go exactly to plan, but clear communication, honest trades, and quality work at the end of the day make all the difference!

Who else can appreciate the impact that removing the corner pantry made in the functionality and feel of this kitchen!? Oftentimes a well designed pantry cabinet can hold the same as a walk in corner pantry, all the while, taking up much less space! This kitchen feels so much larger, with useable counter space for days, despite the footprint almost staying exactly the same as before! Oh- and those beams am I right? 😍😍

✔️Personal touches through items, photos & decor
✔️Wood tones add warmth & character.. things I’m always looking for in new construction!
