In times of struggle and division, it can be healing to reflect on the common threads that unite us across cultures and faiths. One universal symbol is the goddess of healing, who represents the restorative powers of nature, spirit, and community.

Carl Jung said, "The doctor is effective only when he himself is affected. Only the wounded physician heals." This insight rings true across traditions.

While I was whiling away in a battle with Covid, I wanted to create something that reflected a spirit of healing for an ongoing healing altar that I keep for people i am praying over. I didn’t want it to reflect a specific goddess, but the spiritual essence of us as women connecting to that spirit of healing itself. I wanted that confidence of recuperation present, which brought to thought Iaso, the Greek goddess of recuperation, and the knowing of what cures and imagined a serene woman knowing she holds the healing within her and that it has already been enacted. I wanted her floating among Airmid’s tears (the Celtic goddess of healing) whose tears watered the earth creating all of the healing herbs of the world; in flowing white robes, illuminated by rays of soft golden light representing the healing energy of the divine.

Similar goddess figures have been revered for millennia all over the world. Examples include Estsanatlehi in Navajo culture, Airmid as mentioned, Isis in ancient Egypt, Parvati in Hinduism, Brigid in paganism, and Mother Mary in Christianity. The names and imagery vary, but the essence is the same - a feminine spirit who guides us toward wholeness.

I’ve titled her “Sanatio” which is simply the Latin term for healing, and specifically recuperation.

In troubled times, we do well to reflect on this shared symbol of comfort and restoration. Though we may feel isolated in suffering, we are all connected. May we honor the healer within ourselves and each other, manifesting our own light of healing and compassion for those in need.
