Canada’s population is aging rapidly as people live longer and birth rates remain low, with nearly one in five Canadians aged 65 or older by 2025 and the Baby Boomer generation still representing the largest share of the population. The number of seniors—especially those aged 85 and over—is growing much faster than the overall population, leading to increased demand for healthcare, long-term care, housing, and pension benefits. Women continue to outnumber men among the oldest age groups, though the gap is narrowing as male life expectancy rises. This demographic shift will place significant pressure on Canada’s healthcare system and public finances, requiring policy adjustments, increased retirement savings, and a greater focus on preventive and community-based care to support an aging society.
