Lotis is so unfazed by labour and the sounds. She even naps through it 😂. She gets VERY interested once baby is born. Shes probably wonder where this tiny being came from all of a sudden.

While pregnant, I was really hoping I would have a girl ❤️. I wanted my daughter to witness undisturbed birth as “normal.” She will know no different until she starts to get older and learns about the different way women choose to birth. I’m so interested to see how her knowledge of birth evolves over time. How will she react when she starts learning that medicalized birth being the norm? How will she want to birth when/if that day comes?

My little Lotis is 9 months today. Been outside of my womb just as long as she was inside. It’s true, it all goes by incredibly fast.

I seriously cannot wait to give birth again 😂.

Here is what a client wrote about her journey to a dream vbac after 3 previous cesareans.

I had my first baby 9 and a half years ago. I took a birthing class but it wasn’t very informative. I had the what to expect when you’re expecting book. That was all the knowledge I had about birth at the time. When I was very close to my due date, my doctor let me know that the baby was very big. Therefore, I had to be induced. I trusted him and had no idea that wasn’t a reason to induce. I ended up going in and getting the highest dose of pitocen. It did nothing, so I went home. At my next appointment my doctor was really angry with me for going home after the induction. I was sent back to the hospital again to be induced. I ended up dilating to a 9. They told me to start pushing even though I wasn’t ready. I pushed for a half an hour. I overheard the doctor saying she wanted to go home. They said my only option was a c section. I really didn’t want it.

My next baby I researched a lot. I chose my doctor because she was vbac friendly. I got myself a doula. I ended up in the hospital, I asked for a low dose of pitocin. My labor progressed quickly and at a certain point I felt the urge to push. I pushed for 2 and a half hours but the baby wasn’t coming out. The baby was sunny side up and the doctor didn’t know how to turn the baby or give me other positions to push in. I had no other choice but to get another c section.

With my third baby, I chose my midwife because she was willing to work with me to have a Vbac. I get to the hospital in labor and she tells me that based on my last c section, there was a tear during the surgery and therefore she wasn’t going to be helping me achieve a vbac. It was devastating, I felt like I got run over by a truck. So I had my 3rd c section. It took me many weeks to get over the loss of my dream of a vbac.

With my fourth baby there weren’t going to be any midwives that would work with me. I ended up finding out about traditional birth companions. It was the most special pregnancy.

First time parents experiencing a peaceful emergence of their beautiful baby girl.

This was a small part of the golden hour(s) captured in a picture. Waited over an hour for the placenta to release. There was no rush. We spent the time talking about how surprising and amazing the labour and birth went. No one but mum and dad touch the baby, soft lighting, quiet and private, the first latch, laughs and so much love, cord clamping and cutting once the parents felt ready, dog and baby meeting for the first time, dad doing the first weighing. Etc. it was all very gentle.

When I used to witness births within the system, even home births with midwives, there is always pressure. Pressure on the placenta coming out in under 15 mins. If it doesn’t, the midwife/ob will try to push pitocin (synthetic oxytocin) on a woman. Worry and fear about the bleeding postpartum. Worry and fear about the emergence of baby. Pressure to get up to shower and p*e before they leave. Touching baby to do all of their exams (I ask the parents if they feel they need me to check baby). Wanting to do a painful fundal massage to ensure uterus is firming. I found it to be chaotic and disruptive when all a woman wants to do after she gives birth is feel peace and connection with her baby. Sometimes hands on care is needed but these situations are rare. Why apply all these measures in very obviously normal postpartum and birth settings?

Anywho, I’m so lucky to be able to witness these gentle, precious moments!!

My client gave birth to her beautiful baby boy in the summer of 2022. She had done much reflecting since then and I have asked if she’d be comfortable sharing her mindset and story leading up to her out of system birth.

Originally, my client was with the montreal midwives with this second birth. It was meant to be a vbac in system but due to her waters rupturing and labour not starting fast enough for the midwives (while being GBS positive), she was given an intervention heavy route as her only option from the midwives.

This is where she sought me, a birth worker that supports out of system births without judgement. I remember us talking on the phone for the first time while contractions were coming and going! We discussed the researched risks of being GBS positive with her waters rupturing. We were both confused and upset with the fact that the midwives were refusing to support her birth centre birth because of what was going on. The risk of something happening to baby in this circumstance was so incredibly low, compared to the risk of all the interventions they wanted to use in the hospital.

I met her and her family for the first time the day she gave birth and we’ve been friends ever since. It truly is such a fond memory to look back on!

She did it! And so can you. Our bodies are so perfectly designed for physiological birth.

My client was given an ultimatum from her midwives at 31 weeks pregnant. If they were to attend her birth, I cannot be her doula. If she sticks with me as her doula, they’ll be dropping her care. Well, she wasn’t comfortable with her midwife anyway 🤷‍♀️ hehe.

While pushing, I gently guided my client to get into a deep squat so that she had the ability to catch her own baby. What a glorious sight and an extra special experience to have her daughter witness the entire thing.

As I was wrapping things up after the birth, my client and I discussed out of system birthing. She said “I can’t believe I just birthed out of system!!” The idea may seem crazy, even to the people that are doing it but as my client told me, “when you’re actually doing it, it feels so natural and instinctual to do it this way. The atmosphere and vibes were so perfect.” Her husband, who has witnessed his first two being born in the hospital and then the birth centre told me that it was by far the best birth he’s witnessed. He said the entire experience from start to finish was incredibly beautiful.

Trust, patience, love, support, gentleness, power, kindness, respect. That’s what birth is meant to be about.

It’s not often that a client is comfortable sharing intimate and private moments like this but it’s really amazing to be able to share for those curious about the experience.

A pp clients first bind after our in person tutorial vs the second day on her own!

The first week, your bind probably won’t look the most beautiful but it should get the job done. Within a week or so, you’ll be binding in 10 mins, the knots will be straight and tight and you’ll already be noticing the difference!!

I got into birth work mainly because I love working with other women. I adore being one of the main support people during pregnancy, birth and postpartum

After witnessing the trauma that babies can go through if birthed in a medical environment (home or hospital birth directed by medical professionals), I have evolved my reasoning behind my work to be for both baby and mother equally.

I try to encourage intuitive reasoning behind decisions with my clients because although your unborn baby can’t talk, I do feel they connect with their mothers intuitively. They absolutely know what’s best for themselves and are constantly communicating that to their mum. The block between that connection is the fear and anxiety stemming from healthcare providers and a warped view of pregnancy and birth in society.

What creates a stronger, resilient, yet loving generation of people will always start with the birth experience for both woman and baby.

Ps I’ve totally caught baby fever. Blazing hot fever.

Feeling refreshed after my vacation. I’ve been pushing myself to do 3 births a month but starting in September 2023, I think I’m going to scale back to 1-2. Feeling I need to slow down soon. You become desensitized to birth work fast when you take on a lot.

No last minute spots for December. I took it off for a trip, then back in January. One spot left for March, April, May, and June. 2 spots for July ❤️❤️

Going to soak in allll the puppy snuggles that I missed while gone.
