Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) emphasizes the integration of acceptance and challenge-focused strategies. A key component of DBT is the use of dialects, which involves the integration of seemingly opposing ideas or beliefs. For example, DBT acknowledges the need for both acceptance of one’s current situation and a commitment to making changes in one’s life. By working to reconcile these seemingly opposing perspectives, DBT can help individuals develop a more balanced and flexible approach to life’s challenges.

"Accepting includes accepting that you don’t accept things." -Anonymous

Summer's here, and the school bells are on summer vacation, and the sun is shining!☀ But should the routines take a break too?

In this post, we outline tips to help you keep your family on a routine throughout the summer to avoid moody moments, behavioural changes, and stress and anxiety.😎

Bottom line? Balance is key! A little routine mixed with lots of summer fun can make the break both memorable and beneficial. Do you incorporate any of these in your routine already? We'd love to hear!💛

If you've visited our website, you may have noticed that we have some Registered Psychotherapists (Qualifying) with us at Sandstone. But what does it mean to be a qualifying RP?🤔

Registered Psychotherapists (Qualifying) hold a Master’s in Counselling Psychology and complete a 400-hour supervised practicum before registering with the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario (CRPO). They practice under supervision until passing an exam, completing 450 more direct hours and 100 supervision hours—often taking up to three years. Full registration requires 1,000 direct hours and 150 supervision hours, typically over five years. CRPO exam delays due to the pandemic have impacted some practitioners' progress.

Teachers often face unique challenges that can lead to high levels of stress, such as working with large class sizes and managing behaviours and heavy workloads with limited resources.📚 While some amount of stress is inevitable in any job, excessive stress can lead to problems such as anxiety, depression, teacher burnout, and even physical health problems. Psychotherapy can help teachers identify and manage the sources of their stress, develop healthy coping mechanisms, and improve their work-life balance.🍎

The summer may be a great time to seek some therapy as you are able to be fully present instead of dealing with work stress througout the school year. If you are a teacher looking for someone to help you manage this work-related stress, reach out!💛

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is a technique that focuses on finding new ways for people to behave by changing their thought patterns. CBT focuses on present thoughts and beliefs and explores new ways to approach everyday challenges. Over time, practising CBT can help a person learn to:
✨Develop an awareness of automatic, unhelpful thoughts
✨Challenge underlying assumptions that may be unhelpful
✨Distinguish between facts and unhelpful thoughts
✨Develop a more helpful way of thinking and seeing situations

“Peace is the result of retraining your mind to process life as it is, rather than as you think it should be.” -Wayne Dyer

For many people, the summer tends to be a time of feeling good.☀ The warmer weather, sunny days, and activities galore naturally boost your mood. At first glance, this may seem like an unusual time to seek counselling support, but let's take a closer look.🔎

It is understood by most therapists that true healing takes place when things have stabilized in a client's life, even if just slightly. When there is a period of calm, the client and therapist can begin to unravel the complexities of the client's history. This is why starting therapy in the summer (when you tend to feel better) can be a pretty good idea! You can tell your story in a way that prioritizes what you want to work on. When mindful of your goals, it can be helpful to put them into action when you feel lighter, unlike during the more dreary winter months.

Sandstone offers virtual and in-person sessions year-round, making it easy to fit therapy into any summer schedule. Visit the link in our bio to learn more!💛
