🌸I am here to hold you as much as you need it.
🌸I exercise and workout for lots of reasons, but being able to support you however you need it is a big one.
🌸This mama’s contractions were minimum one and a half minutes, with some lasting as long as two and a half minutes (and one 6 minute one 😅😅😅). She was loving the hip squeezes, and letting go mid-contraction is just not an option.
She even said to me at one point after a two and a half minute contraction, “no wonder you weight lift so much”. 🤣
🌸Yes it is tough, and yes it can hurt for me, but I am there for you, and I will never let go until we work through the contraction together.
🌸And I never want you to be afraid to ask for this support. It’s what I am here for and what I signed up to do. And so I stay strong to help you stay strong. 🤍

…and yes, full disclosure, I needed to take arnica and Tylenol before bed that night. 😆

🌸The breaking of the waters🌸
🌸The media loves to portray this event as the moment every labour starts, followed by a mad panic of trying to get to the hospital before the baby comes out… this is pretty far from the truth.
🌸In fact, the waters breaking before any contractions or labour happens in only about 8-10% of births.
🌸In reality, the waters remain in tact until somewhere throughout labour, and there are several factors that can affect the timing for each person.
🌸One huge factor that DEFINITELY changes how early the waters break is cervical checks or membrane sweeps. These unnecessary interventions disrupt the bag of waters and often cause it to break much earlier than it would have on its own.
🌸If the cervix and bag of waters are left alone, the water breaking typically happens much later in labour, or doesn’t happen at all until baby is born.
🌸This Mama, for example, had a very strong bag of waters that remained in tact until she began pushing. It broke as she roared through a powerful contraction, and her baby girl was born a mere 10 minutes after this moment!
🌸And while this video is a good visual of the bag “popping” and gushing, it can also be much less dramatic and simply have a slow leak, almost to the point where it feels like you are just peeing a little whenever you move.
🌸Just remember, every body and birth is different!

🌸6 years ago today.
🌸I have the full story on my page for anyone who wants to listen, but here are the main points:
-I developed severe eclampsia at 41 weeks (no symptoms beforehand so therefore no way we could have avoided or prevented it). When I got to the hospital my blood pressure was 275/174 (normal is around 120/80).
-from my first symptom to my son being born was only 3 hours.
-the staff had the medication for my blood pressure ready, but never actually gave it to me.
-after the epidural wore off (about 30 minutes post surgery), my blood pressure spiked back up and caused a seizure, which turned into HELLP syndrome (certain bodily systems begin to shut down, amongst other things).
-My husband was shoved out of the room and put in a dark room alone with our newborn, not given any information on what was happening.
-my family was told I had a 50/50 chance of surviving.
-I was transported to a larger hospital and spent a full week in the ICU. I had swelling in my brain and kidney failure, amongst other things.
-My baby spent his first night in the NICU even though he was healthy. He got to stay with me afterwards, but only if someone else stayed with me.
-I had two CT scans and an MRI, and was seen by every specialist in the hospital.
-The care I got from the doctors was awful, and I eventually left against medical advice so I could heal at home (which I did).
🌸Yes this birth was an emergency, but so much of the aftermath could have been avoided had I been treated properly.
🌸I am forever grateful that my son was safe and healthy, but will forever hate the fact that I didn’t get those first moments with him, and that my husband and I never got to experience the bliss of becoming new parents. It still hurts to this day, but it has helped me become the mother and doula I am now.

🌸The letter I wrote to the OB who robbed me.

🌸After my second c-section, I read in a book that writing a letter to your provider about your traumatic birth could provide some healing. While I didn’t really like the rest of the book, this idea stood out to me.
🌸The OB who told me I “needed” a c-section had only known me for about 30 seconds. And in that 30 seconds she completely ruined everything I had hoped and dreamed of and worked so hard for… all so she could get me out of her care as fast as possible.
🌸When I started the letter, so much of me wanted to just yell and scream hateful things at her. But I knew if I did that, she likely wouldn’t even read the letter, and if she did she would dismiss it just as fast.
So I decided to try and take a more rational, informative approach, in hopes that she would at least consider my words.
🌸I did not sign it, I left no return address, and I have no idea if she ever even read it… but the second I put that letter in the post-box, I felt lighter.

🌸How incredible is it that I get to call this “work”?
🌸Met up with this gorgeous girl and her beautiful Mama today for a postpartum visit. I love these visits for many reasons, one of the biggest being that we get to debrief and go over all the little details of the birth.

🌸And while I will never ask to hold your baby (because I am there to hold you), if you ever ask if I want to hold them, you can bet my answer will always be YES! 💕

🌸As of today Aylin has now been on the outside for exactly as long as she was on the inside. 🥹 Where did all that time go?
🌸I’m a big fan of comparison photos, and seeing my belly on the day she was born (first photo) compared to my belly now is just so crazy. The way our bodies can change to accommodate a growing human, and then shrink right back down will never cease to amaze me.
