Today, on the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, we pause to reflect on the Faculty of Medicine’s ongoing journey: building community and working toward a more just, equitable, and inclusive health care system. 🧡
This reflection carries special meaning this year as the Indigenous Program at the uOttawa Faculty of Medicine marks 20 years of progress and partnership. Since its creation within Undergraduate Medical Education, 100 Indigenous students have completed the program and are now practicing family doctors, researchers, educators, residents, and more. Their contributions light the path for the next generation of Indigenous physicians in Canada.
⭐ Guided by community as its constant North Star, the Indigenous Program has also advanced the principle of culturally safe care and enriched the medical curriculum by valuing Indigenous knowledge alongside mainstream health care. Just as importantly, it shines a vital light on how the social determinants of health continue to shape the realities of Indigenous communities.
