Shawna Banville, Art Psychotherapist

Shawna Banville, Art Psychotherapist Art Therapy is a mindful attuning and leaning into the creative process in the present moment in the context of a safe and nurturing therapeutic relationship.

Clinic Director of Grey Bruce Art Therapy & Associates, Shawna Banville, BA, RP, RCAT, Registered Art Psychotherapist, has nearly 20 years experience in the field of social services, interpersonal violence sector, and creative mental health care. Art Therapy provides opportunities for verbal and non-verbal expression of thoughts and feelings as well as reflection, interpretation, mirroring, reframing, self mastery, revealing unconscious meanings and ultimately personal discovery and transformation. My approach is relational, client centered, trauma informed, culturally sensitive, compassionate inquiry informed, as well as rooted in mindfulness, motivational interviewing, somatic approaches, psychoeducation, and DBT. Using imagery, colour and shape as part of personal exploration, thoughts and feelings can be expressed that would otherwise be difficult to articulate and process. Art Therapy can be beneficial for all ages and for a variety of personal challenges including anxiety, depression, interpersonal difficulties, trauma, etc. No Artistic experience necessary! Relationship, trust and authenticity are essential components of any therapeutic alliance, and thus I aim to create an environment for my clients which is safe, comfortable, honest and non-judgmental. If you are curious and/or interested, I invite you to give me a call for a free consultation to discuss options. I look forward to hearing from you.

Well we did it! We moved to our new space this past weekend! Just when we thought it was impossible to get all the Reno’s done in time, we managed to complete the first three offices! Thankyou, Thankyou, Thankyou to all the folks that helped us make this happen as we would not have been able to make this happen without you!!! (Brett, Jess, Nancy, Karie, Cindy and my patient kid Charlie 🙂 ) We still have lots to do but we are onto the fun part of making this space cozy, creative and our very own ❤️😊🥰🙏🧑‍🎨

It's been a long week of blustery snowy days, and I know we are all ready for the sun! It's better to stay safe and warm rather than brave dangerous driving conditions and so please remember that virtual therapy is always an option!

Switching to virtual provides flexibility and accessibility when the weather turns or when weeks get busy.

Whether you’re talking, creating, or doing both — therapy doesn’t have to wait for better weather.

Due to the snowy weather this drop in art studio group will be cancelled today.

Also please note that there will be no group next week as we will be busy with our move to the new office!

The open art Studio for newcomers to Canada will resume on February 6th at the Harmony Centre in studio 12 downstairs.

Stay safe and warm!

We are now offering a free drop in Art Therapy group for Newcomers to Grey Bruce! Ukrainian Art-Psychotherapy Student Maryna Kostenko is a Newcomer herself and knows all too well the challenges that come with transitioning to Canada and the importance of having and creating safe community to share and connect with others who understand. Please see the below poster for details and feel free to reach out with any questions!

When your mind will not switch off, you do not need answers straight away. You need words that help you slow down.

This poster shares simple, grounding phrases that young people and adults can use when anxiety rises, thoughts spiral, or emotions feel too much. It supports calming the nervous system, creating mental space, and responding rather than reacting in stressful moments.

These statements are especially helpful during anxiety, overwhelm, emotional overload, burnout, or periods of high pressure. They work well for teenagers and adults who struggle with overthinking, self criticism, or feeling stuck in their head. The language is clear, reassuring, and easy to return to when thinking feels chaotic.

Useful at home, in education settings, therapy rooms, workplaces, or wellbeing spaces. Sometimes reading one steady sentence is enough to get through the moment.

From humble beginnings to creative expansion in 2026!

I got the keys to the new office! I can’t believe I have already been at the Harmony Centre for almost 15 months! I am so grateful for the creative beginnings the Harmony Centre afforded me. Such an amazing hub of wonderful and supportive community folks. Thankyou so much for everything!

I am also just so excited to be growing and expanding and to be welcoming more amazing therapists to the team. So many awesome possibilities for collaboration and diverse offerings 😀 stay tuned for more updates as the space comes along. We hope to move in the first week of February!
