Shawna Banville, Art Psychotherapist

Shawna Banville, Art Psychotherapist Shawna has nearly 20 years experience supporting individuals and families dealing with a wide range of challenges. No Artistic experience necessary!

She is a Registered Psychotherapist , and Registered Art Therapist with the Ontario and Canadian Art Therapy Associations. Art Therapy is a mindful attuning and leaning into the creative process in the present moment in the context of a safe and nurturing therapeutic relationship. Art Therapy provides opportunities for verbal and non-verbal expression of thoughts and feelings as well as reflection, interpretation, mirroring, reframing, self mastery, revealing unconscious meanings and ultimately personal discovery and transformation. My approach is relational, client centered, trauma informed, culturally sensitive, compassionate inquiry informed, as well as rooted in mindfulness, motivational interviewing, somatic approaches, psychoeducation, and DBT. Using imagery, colour and shape as part of personal exploration, thoughts and feelings can be expressed that would otherwise be difficult to articulate and process. Art Therapy can be beneficial for all ages and for a variety of personal challenges including anxiety, depression, interpersonal difficulties, trauma, etc. Relationship, trust and authenticity are essential components of any therapeutic alliance, and thus I aim to create an environment for my clients which is safe, comfortable, honest and non-judgmental. If you are curious and/or interested, I invite you to give me a call for a free consultation to discuss options. I look forward to hearing from you.

Instead of running from our shadows, we could be curious to see what is there….The shapes, the objects, the names of things and people put on paper begin to look different to us. We gain perspective, see things we thought were frightening as much smaller and more manageable. We see opportunities for creative decisions and possibilities and perhaps we even bring our attention to the areas of light between the dark places.

A big thank-you to Georgian Shores United Church for their donation to help supplement and reduce therapy costs for 2SLGBTQ++ individuals! Waitlists can be long for public services, and not everyone has the means to cover private therapy. This donation will help to make it more feasible for some, and I know it will be very much appreciated!

This is an especially challenging time for the 2SLGBTQ++ community and it is so important to have safe, supportive and identify affirming supports available for all.
