Shawna Banville, Art Psychotherapist

Shawna Banville, Art Psychotherapist Art Therapy is a mindful attuning and leaning into the creative process in the present moment in the context of a safe and nurturing therapeutic relationship.

Clinic Director of Grey Bruce Art Therapy & Associates, Shawna Banville, BA, RP, RCAT, Registered Art Psychotherapist, has nearly 20 years experience in the field of social services, interpersonal violence sector, and creative mental health care. Art Therapy provides opportunities for verbal and non-verbal expression of thoughts and feelings as well as reflection, interpretation, mirroring, refram

ing, self mastery, revealing unconscious meanings and ultimately personal discovery and transformation. My approach is relational, client centered, trauma informed, culturally sensitive, compassionate inquiry informed, as well as rooted in mindfulness, motivational interviewing, somatic approaches, psychoeducation, and DBT. Using imagery, colour and shape as part of personal exploration, thoughts and feelings can be expressed that would otherwise be difficult to articulate and process. Art Therapy can be beneficial for all ages and for a variety of personal challenges including anxiety, depression, interpersonal difficulties, trauma, etc. No Artistic experience necessary! Relationship, trust and authenticity are essential components of any therapeutic alliance, and thus I aim to create an environment for my clients which is safe, comfortable, honest and non-judgmental. If you are curious and/or interested, I invite you to give me a call for a free consultation to discuss options. I look forward to hearing from you.

I was on the radio for the first time today! I was asked to join Philly's call in show on CFOS to talk about turning towards the arts during times of struggle and I had an opportunity to talk a little about Art Therapy.

What’s in your cup in this moment? Is it full? Is it feeling low? Heavy? Spilling over the edge? And with what? Each time I do this exercise my cup looks different depending on how I am feeling, what I am facing in that moment, and how my body is functioning. The colours change, the shapes may change, some days the cup is a mess of scribbled lines or foggy hues. Other days there is more clarity. The morning I did this one I was experiencing the pride and overwhelm and sometimes impatience that comes with career growth and scaling. It’s reaching, blooming, stretching and balancing on the edge. Art therapy can provide you with tools for exploring your own growth and personal transformation.

In your own life, what season are you in? What is your next move? Feel free to reach out if you want to have a phone chat to see if Art Therapy may be a good fit to support you in exploring these questions.

Art making provides a communication bridge in the therapy room, and also serves to "speak" the unspoken, as well as thoughts, beliefs, and feelings just beyond conscious awareness contributing to new insights and growing self awareness. This externalization also helps to provide distance from the "thing" causing distress and thus may help to reduce anxiety, and provide a sense of control. When it is your own creation in front of you, you are also faced with the awareness that changes can be made both in your art and your life.

We had a fun team building day last week turning our chairs into Art! and exploring the metaphor of the "chair" as a team:
-what do we each bring to the table?
-how do we each wish to support our clients?
-how do we wish to support each other and ourselves in this important work that we do?

Art based clinical consultation and supervision provides creative opportunities to explore our own subconscious and unconscious thoughts, feelings and beliefs. At Grey Bruce Art Therapy & Associates we deeply value creative self reflective practice as a way to continue our own personal work to ensure that we are able to be fully present and grounded for our clients. We also have fun in the process! 😀🩷 🎨🫟

Sharing this beautiful offering from a friend and respected colleague!

She is hosting a Mindful Self-Compassion series and brings a great deal of expertise, care, and authenticity to this work. I deeply value what she offers and wanted to help spread the word.

If you’ve been wanting to cultivate more kindness toward yourself, this could be a wonderful opportunity.
