Have you tried to detox and ended up feeling worse than before?

You weren’t doing it wrong. Your body was trying to protect you the only way it knew how.

It wasn’t fighting against you, it was fighting for you.

Here’s what’s actually happening:

40–60% of us have an MTHFR genetic mutation, and this puts your body’s detox pathways under extra pressure.

MTHFR affects how your body processes folate → a critical piece in methylation.

Methylation is one of your body’s most important repair and detox systems. When it’s sluggish, your liver has a harder time processing toxins, clearing out excess hormones, and keeping your mood and energy stable.

Even without a formal diagnosis, sluggish methylation is incredibly common—especially if you:

→ Are neurodivergent
→ Are sensitive to medications
→ Have a history of anxiety, autoimmunity, or chronic health struggles

(Even if you’ve never been tested, your body could probably use a little extra support. It’s never a bad idea.)

So when you dive into a heavy cleanse without making sure the exits are open, everything your body’s trying to clear out through your lymph, liver, gut, and kidneys starts backing up.

And when the garbage has nowhere to go? Your body slams on the emergency brake.

The headaches start creeping in.
The skin flares.
The exhaustion hits harder than it should.

And you find yourself thinking, “Why the heck do I feel worse now than before I started?”

It’s just a traffic jam. And your body is doing everything it can to keep you safe.

Feeling terrible during a cleanse used to be a badge of honour, but now we know better. It's actually your body throwing up a white flag, asking for some help.

“Can my body really tell the difference between berries in my overnight oats and a spoonful of sugar?”

Such a great question, and ohhh, it’s the perfect example of why sugar talk gets so confusing.

So let’s clear this up: YES, your body absolutely knows the difference! There’s a world of difference between antioxidant- and fiber-rich berries and a spoonful of refined sugar.

🍓 Berries give you a slow trickle of glucose (energy!) thanks to their fiber and nutrients. It’s like giving your body a steady, stable fuel source.

🍭 Refined sugar, on the other hand, hits your bloodstream like a rocket—causing blood sugar spikes that, over time, can lead to inflammation, insulin resistance, and more.

The big problem? There’s just enough truth in “all carbs turn to sugar” talk to make it sound convincing…but it misses SO MUCH nuance. 🙃

Your body needs carbs, fats, AND protein—it thrives on balance, not extremes. But wow, does demonizing sugar sell a lot of overpriced low-carb snacks. (Looking at you, $12 high-protein pasta 👀).

Stuck in the “weight loss trap”?

Most diets feed us the same tired advice—eat less, move more, shrink yourself.

Sound familiar?

But what if that advice is actually working against you?

Here’s what they don’t tell you:
❌ Dieting slows your metabolism—yep, it’s science.
❌ It burns through muscle first, not fat (and your future self needs that muscle!).
