World Mental Health Day is celebrated every year on 10 October.

Poor mental health is not inevitable, and World Mental Health Day is an opportunity for us all to talk about mental health and consider how, together, we can help everyone have better mental health.

This year’s theme set by the World Federation for Mental Health is access to services - mental health in catastrophes and emergencies. The theme highlights the importance of people being able to protect their mental health whatever they're going through, because everyone deserves good mental health.

On this Truth and Reconciliation Day, we acknowledge the profound impact that the residential school system has had on the mental health of Indigenous peoples. The trauma of colonization and the loss of language, culture, and community has had lasting effects that are still felt today.

As a mental health organization, we are committed to supporting the healing and wellness of Indigenous individuals and pledge to work towards a future where all people can thrive.

CMHA-SOS is proud to unveil the River of Resilience mural, created by artist Mavik in downtown Princeton, BC. This vibrant and meaningful artwork is more than just a mural — it’s a symbol of Princeton’s strength, unity, and determination in the face of adversity.

A river embodies movement, transformation, and the enduring flow of time. Even after disruption, it reminds us that life carries on. The River of Resilience mural honors the spirit of Princeton following the historic 2021 flood, standing as a powerful visual tribute of how the community has come together, rebuilt, and continues to move forward — united by hope, perseverance, and resilience.

The mural was brought to life through a collaboration between CMHA-SOS, the Penticton & District Arts Council, the United Way & Thomasina’s Cafe. It also marks the launch of a broader mental health initiative led by CMHA to support Princeton residents still recovering from the flood. Dierra Maynard coordinated the entire mural project with the assistance of Tristan Boisvert from the Penticton & District Community Arts Council, engaging young local artists who contributed to the design and concept, making it a true community effort.

“Princeton still has a long road ahead in recovering from the 2021 flood, but the strength of this community continues to shine. Through generous support from the Red Cross, CMHA has been able to offer free programs like Mental Health First Aid training, art therapy, su***de prevention workshops, and counselling. These resources are helping people heal — emotionally and mentally — and the River of Resilience mural is a beautiful reflection of that journey.”
— Dierra Maynard, Program Coordinator

All mental health programs are free of charge thanks to a generous grant from the Canadian Red Cross. CMHA would like to thank Thomasina's Cafe, Cooper Equipment Rentals, Similkameen Septic & Home Building Centre for their donations to the project. For upcoming workshops or to access free counselling, please contact Dierra Maynard at dierra.maynard@cmhasos.ca or call 250-295-5560.
