December has so many amazing foods in season!
You’ve heard me talk a million times about the benefits of seasonal eating and how it truly can improve your health.

I’d love to hear which one is your favourite fruit and vegetable!
For me personally, I’ve been eating pears and carrots non stop and I’m going to try a few new ones I haven’t tried before.

Where does digestion start?

In the brain 🧠

Aromas and sights while cooking signals the body to prepare for digestion. This means digestion starts way earlier than most people may think.

⏩We live in such a crazy busy world where access to food is instant. We’re literally skipping over the first stage of digestion and we’re seeing the impacts of it.

⏸️We’re not taking the time to slow down when eating because we’re on the go and don’t have the time.

Why is this important?

We’re seeing a lot of gut health problems and we need to be addressing all areas, this includes home life. Studies show that children who grow up in households where home-cooked meals are frequent tend to have healthier dietary habits. This can lead to less digestive problems later on in life.

What symptoms can arise from a lack of taking the time to cook and initiate the digestive process?
- bloating
- gas
- constipation
- nutritional deficiencies
- acne
- inflammation
and so much more

For those wanting to work on their gut health, I encourage you to start cooking at home. Make your meals, add aromatic ingredients, if you need help with this please reach out 🫶🏼

Benefits of Healthy Fats 🥑

When I am looking over a clients food journal, one of the most important areas I’m looking at is are there any major nutritional areas missing.

Healthy fats are usually the ones that are missing.

Why we want to include healthy fats into every meal:
📈Blood Sugar Management: Healthy fats help to slow down the absorption of carbohydrates, which can lead to more stable blood sugar levels.
🧠Brain Health: The brain is approximately 60% fat, healthy fats are crucial for brain function.
🥰Hormone production: healthy fats are needed for hormonal balance. Including estrogen and testosterone.
🫀Heart Health: healthy fats help reduce LDL cholesterol levels, known as the “bad” cholesterol.

Some client love 🥹

There truly is no greater compliment I could receive as a holistic nutritionist than hearing someone say that you’ve given someone their life back 🥲🥹.

Working with other healthcare teams (naturopaths in this case) is something I love to do. This was definitely a team effort and I’m so grateful for the Naturopaths in our area who make such a positive impact on our community as a lot of us aren’t able to get family Drs. They are in such high demand and I cannot recommend them enough.

If I find I need more answers with a client I will always recommend they see a Naturopath to get a deeper look into blood work, testing, etc. to get to the bottom of their symptoms. This client saw us both and I’m incredibly proud of the results they achieved in a couple of months.

A morning routine sets the tone for the rest of your day, so if you’re looking to reduce stress, increase your productivity, improve your sleep, and have more energy throughout the day, this is for you!

I’m sharing my morning routine with you as an example. These are the things I’ve found to have the biggest impact on my health and well-being and I’ve noticed many improvements in my own symptoms from incorporating these morning routines:

👅- If you’re looking for new ways to improve your gut health, start your day with brushing your teeth and tongue scrapping.
You want to get all of the coating on your tongue off before you consume food or water because that coating can contain harmful bacteria and toxins. The mouth is the gateway to the gut, so removing those bacteria and toxins can benefit your overall gut health.

💧- Having a large glass of room temperature water with salt and lemon. After sleeping for 8-9 hours, we wake up dehydrated. You may notice headaches, brain fog, muscle cramps, dry mouth, etc. upon waking up. I’ve found this to be one of the best additions to my morning routine.

🍳- A high protein breakfast is truly a game changer. If you’re noticing your energy crashes mid day, incorporate more protein.

🌞- Morning sunlight is the best time of my day. This truly sets the tone of my day and I feel so much more alert and happy when I get morning sun exposure. If you’re working on addressing your hormones, I suggest you add this in to your morning routine asap.

More like a Burnout Bowl 🫠

Nutrition is going to be really important if you’re suffering from burnout.
You’re most likely not feeling very hungry either, so making quick and simple meals will be ideal.

The Buddha bowl is a fantastic option because you can cook everything together to save time!

Instructions:
Cook 1 cup of Quinoa (depending on if you want leftovers) and add to the bowl.
Cook your choice of whatever vegetables you like on a sheet pan and drizzle olive oil and any other seasonings you like. You can add the chicken or protein choice with them as well.
Cook at 400 for 20-25 mins depending on how you like them done and protein is fully cooked.

Assemble all ingredients to your bowl and add your choice of sauce.

Going off of my series about being too busy to eat, we are talking about what can happen after.

It’s overwhelming.
I’ve been seeing a lot more people who are experiencing burnout and don’t even know it.
These symptoms can obviously be from other sources, but if you are experiencing 1 or more of these signs it’s most likely burnout.

I’ve been seeing this in those running their own businesses. Establishing a routine early on can help set yourself up for success and keep your business running smoothly.
Running yourself sick is not only going to hurt your business but, more importantly, yourself.

With the amount of wild fires happening and the quality of the air, here is a quick guide to help you support your lung health.

✨Cruciferous Vegetables: Vegetables like broccoli, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, and cabbage belong to the cruciferous family and are rich in antioxidants and fiber. They’ve been shown to be beneficial for supporting overall lung health.
✨Green Tea: Is rich in antioxidants, particularly catechins, which have been to have protective effects on lung tissue. Drinking green tea may help promote lung health.
✨ Omega-3 Rich Foods: Adding sources of omega-3 fatty acids into your diet, such as fatty fish (salmon, mackerel, sardines), chia seeds, and walnuts. Omega-3s have anti-inflammatory properties and may help reduce the risk of asthma and respiratory symptoms.
✨ Mullein: Mullein leaves are commonly used in herbal remedies for respiratory conditions. They are known for their soothing properties, helping to relieve coughs and congestion.
✨ Marshmallow Root: Marshmallow root is known for its soothing and mucilaginous properties. It can help alleviate coughs and soothe irritated throat and bronchial tissues.
✨ Licorice Root: Licorice root is commonly used in herbal formulations for respiratory conditions. It has expectorant properties and can help soothe irritated airways.

The perfect summer meal 🤤

If someone asked me what meal I could eat everyday? It’s this one.

It’s so light and fresh during the hot summer months, it’s also high in protein and Fiber which is something I always focus on in my meals to provide stable energy, satiety, and reduced cravings.

Please note that I eyeball every single ingredient so I don’t have measurements to share, use how ever much you enjoy!
How I cook this recipe:
Large filet of salmon (I like to cook extra so I have some for the week)
Seasoned with- olive oil, salt, Dijon, paprika, honey. I like the spicy sweet flavour!

1 cup rice (I also make extra for meal prep)
1/2 an avocado
Mango (I used fresh mango but you can use frozen and warm it up)
Sauces: tamari, spicy mayo
