Mark your calendars for April 1, 2026 — the first full moon of spring peaks at 10:12 PM ET

Don't worry, it's not actually pink (no April Fools' trick here 😂), but it's named after the beautiful phlox subulata (moss pink) wildflowers that bloom in early spring, carpeting the ground in soft shades of pink. A lovely sign that warmer days and blooming landscapes are on the way!

The Biological Defibrillators of Early Spring

When the March sun finally warms the thawing earth, a solitary Queen Bumblebee pushes her way to the surface. She hasn't eaten in six months. She is entirely alone, freezing, and dangerously close to starvation.

We often view the first dandelions, native Spring Beauties (Claytonia virginica), and wild violets as nuisance weeds, rushing out to mow or spray them to achieve a pristine lawn. But in the ecological calendar, these are the most critical plants of the entire year.

Unlike honeybees, bumblebee colonies do not survive the winter. Only the mated queens live. Right now across the US, these exhausted queens are desperately scanning a gray, sleeping landscape. Those early "weeds" act as biological defibrillators, providing a hyper-concentrated shot of emergency nectar and pollen. This fuel is mandatory to jumpstart the queen's metabolism so she can find a nest and begin laying eggs.

If we cut these early stars, the queen starves. If she dies, an entire summer colony of hundreds of native pollinators never exists.

Delay your first spring mow. Leave the dandelions and violets standing until the local fruit trees are in full bloom.

A perfectly manicured March lawn is an ecological desert; a messy yard is a nursery for the wild.
