Teaching a “Winter Flow & Restore” class. The title of this class intrigues me because it makes you think how can my practice look different to connect to the late winter season. Looking at it from a bit of an Ayurvedic perspective this is a season of heaviness & dampness . But it can be balanced out with lighter and energy. Down dog pose is a great shape for this season as it invigorates & calms the nervous system. Adding in a twist in photo 1 as digestion is slow this time of year 💃🏻

Get on all 4’s and lift your hips up & back! If your back rounds then bend your knees as much as needed to find length through the back & send the hips back in space. Notice how my heels are down in photo 1 & up in photo 2? Photo 1 may come with lots of practice, photo 2 is real life!

Just when you thought The Willow Studio - Yoga, Fitness, Pilates couldn’t get any better!

Making yoga accessible to as many people as possible is something we are really passionate about.

Over the past year, we have been listening and learning about the challenges BIPOC members of our community face when it comes to accessing health and wellness resources. Individuals from these groups often express that they feel unwelcome in the yoga community.

We want to change that.

Our new bursary program was created in partnership with B YOGA and Halfmoon to subsidize yoga classes for people in our community who identify as Black, Indigenous or as People of Colour and for whom cost is a barrier. It is our hope that this program will encourage diversity in the yoga community and promote the benefits of yoga to a wider population, in particular to those who identify as Black, Indigenous or Persons of Colour.

I decided to take my own yoga practice via. online database with The Willow Studio - Yoga, Fitness, Pilates . Normally I would spend the time judging the sound of my voice, what I say & what I teach.

This time was different.

After being in a pre and post natal body I feel like a totally different person now. As if I was also born with Lena. I can separate myself from that yoga teacher and I can proudly say that ...

She is a KICKASS teacher! Challenging, yet well rounded. She kicked my ass & I can learn a lot from her. But I can also learn from the new Monika, the new teacher that will teach with a bit of a softer approach because she now sees what it’s like to start fresh.

Starting fresh isn’t a bad thing, it provides a new perspective & maybe even some much needed empathy.

I look forward to being your new yoga teacher & I look forward to learning along side you.

Ps. I will ALWAYS do a core warm up in flow based classes, so don’t expect it to be “too easy” 😉

Has your yoga practice shifted? Do you compare it to what it use to be?

My practice definitely shifted and I can’t help but compare it to the creative 60-90 minute practices I would do daily. Now it involves nursing, holding, soothing an infant after a few moments on the mat surrounded by toys and burp cloths.

If you find yourself judging your practice lately let work together on releasing that guilt, expectation, impatience etc... and instead move forward. Move towards the unknown. There was a time we didn’t even know what a practice was. What if we create something different, something beautiful that is outside of the 60 minute box?

Is there any correlation between being a good person and doing yoga? If you want to be a good person you have to practice being a good person.

I can’t expect to learn how to hold a handstand by practicing shavasana. Just like I can’t expect to become a better person by practicing handstands.

Do the physical practice to feel good! And then practice being a good person by continuously practicing being kind, generous, compassionate, welcoming, etc...

It’s ok to do yoga just because it feels GOOD to move! Do we really need to be so hard on ourself saying that we killed yoga? Maybe we killed the so called traditional yoga. Maybe we also evolved yoga to better suits our evolving selves now to help us survive and thrive! I mean physically surviving and thriving by moving better for longer, not by giving us super powers to make better decisions and be better humans.

Should we keep the two separate?
